Default Irregular periods, less than 6 per year

I'm 20-yea-old female and barring a UT problem that rose up last May I'm healthy with a decent diet/exercise habit.

I started my period the day of my tenth birthday. For the first few years my periods were REALLY heavy, tended to last about two weeks, and I'd experience unpleasant side affects, mostly cramps and nausea.

They've lightened up over the years, last from five to twelve days, and I only get mild cramps on the first day now, but they've never been regular and I average about six periods a year. They aren't on any kind of a schedule and at least once a year they'll skip for about three months.

I went on an oral contraceptive once when I was fourteen of fifteen for about four months. My periods became monthly and predictable but all the days between my periods left with a sticky brown discharge so I stopped taking them.

Neither my mother nor my little sister share my problem.

Anyway, I'm really worried that I'm infertile or worse. Doctors don't seem worried because I don't want to conceive now but it is on the back of my mind more and more. I've always been told that things would right themselves out but I'm not a teenager anymore and things haven't become normal.

Can anybody suggest a possible culprit? Thanks. =)

    Default Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

You may have a condition known as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). I was diagnosed w/ the condition about 15 years ago, but I had the very same symptoms as you do. With PCOS your ovaries have multiple cysts on/in them, which affects ovulation and hormone production. Some of the other symptoms are acne that doesn't go away no matter what you do, weight gain - primarily in your midsection like a spare tire, dark spots on your skin, and darker genital area skin. With PCOS conception is VERY difiicult, in fact many women who have the condition have to go through in vitro to have children (I'm going through the process myself). Dr. Nancy Dunne has a website totally devoted to PCOS, but you should really go to your doctor and ask him/her about PCOS. I'll attach the link to the website to this post.

    Default Thanks

Thanks very much. I've read about this before, I just don't have any skin or weight problems so I wasn't sure if i was excluded.

Thanks very much for the link. How long did you try to get pregnant before you decided to go with invitro?

I have this problem as well and I am 21! I have been tested for Polycystic Ovaries and it came back negative. This has been happening since I was about 14 or 15. So what else can it be? It really bothers me.
