Exclamation Spotting or something worse? (slightly graphic)

I have been using NuvaRing since right after my daughter was born in August 2006. Since then, I have not had any spotting in between periods and my periods have been regular. Unfortunately, having a child had taken a toll on our sex life and so the last 6 months or so, we have been having a bit of a drought. We were only being intimate once or twice every one to two weeks. The 15th (Father's Day) of this month we had sex for the first time in almost 4 weeks. Everything went fine and when I went to clean up, I found that I was bleeding. My period had ended on the 6th (as usual) so I figured that maybe having sex had just caused a bit of spotting. The next day, I had experienced some cramping and had not stopped bleeding. We had sex that night and it hurt. The top of my cervix was incredibly tender and my "insides" were swollen to the point that it hurt to penetrate. The next day, the bleeding had given way to brown discharge and then nothing. The next day, I started bleeding again and this time it was heavier, period like bleeding.

It's been 3 weeks later and I have bled almost every day since. It has gone from discharge to light to heavy bleeding and back again. Last night, we had sex again and it wasn't painful until the very end. The top of my cervix didn't hurt this time, but the area that would approximately be over my g-spot did. When I rolled over after sex, there was this gush "down there". I ran to the bathroom and saw that my inner thighs were covered in blood and it was running down my leg. I cleaned up, put in a tampon and when I went to lay down, my abdomen hurt mildly. I went to sleep and when I woke up this morning, my tampon was almost completely dry.

Any idea what could possibly be wrong here? When I was on Depo, I bled , between light and heavy, every day for a year but my doctor told me that it was nothing to worry about. This feels different though, I don't understand why it would just come out of the blue like that. Should I go to the doctor for this or will they just tell me that it's spotting and send me on my way?

did you end up going to the doctor for this? If not, I really think you should. It sounds like there could be something wrong. did you eventually stop bleeding?
