Why don't you do a couple of things first? Get a complete physical including a full blood work up, You could have a deficiency ar some sort of chemical imbalance. If that doesn't turn up anything, go see a Naturpathic doctor.
I've been depressed ever since I was 11 years old, and when I was diagnosed at the time I refused anti-depressants because the idea of medication scared me. I hated therapy and insisted on quitting, despite my depression never improving.
It's been over 10 years and I'm getting sick of being so fragile and hyper-sensative. I'm considering anti-depressants, but I'm also afraid how they'll conflict with my birth control. As of now I don't plan to go off birth control, because I experience severe lack of appetite without it, so I need something that will have no effect on birth control at all (or for that matter, something that will not decrease my appetite.)
My other issue is that I don't always get depressed for no reason.. I typically get upset over tragic issues I can never stop dwelling on. I don't know if medication could possibly free me from being upset about certain things. I've also been told that medication only works if you have therapy as well.. and I really despise therapy.
Please tell me what your experiences with medication are, whether they worekd or not. I really appreciate your help! It's a big decision for me.

It's not strictly true that they don't help without other therapies. AD's work by helping restore a chemical imbalance within teh brain and that would happen even if you didn't take it along with another talking therapy. The talking therapies do however help with coping with things and can instill helpful strategies which can help you cope when you stop taking medication. i would suggest talking to your doctor, voice all of your concerns and discuss the options. Most AD's won't make you put on weight or lose significant amounts after the first two weeks but there are one or two types to avoid. if you do decide to take medication i would suggest that you combine it with other therapies such as exercise, a nutrition programme yoga etc.
From personal experience however, i know that if you are overly apprehensive about medication it will exacerbate the anxiety of taking them. I woudl try the exercise, nutrition thing in the first instance and maybe read a book about CBT if you don't actually want to see a counsellor as that can be helpful. if you don't see any improvement i would recommend seeing a doctor
I took several different things for my depression/anxiety none of them worked (I was also doing psycho therapy) I quit going to the doctor.
I went for a physical and mentioned wanting to quit smoking, but I couldn't because it helped calm my nerves and kind of keep my moods even. The doc put me on fluotetine, and it helped EVERYTHING.... no more cigarettes or therapy.... and it's a $4 rx at wal mart.
