This whole economic crisis thing has been really scaring me lately...luckily I am not yet out in the workforce and to those who are and those who are suffering; stay strong. I am a 21 year old college student, so I will graduate next year. I tend to obsess over things; and one of them is finding a job after I graduate. I do plan to go to grad school, but I'm really worried about not finding a job. My parents initially insisted that I do business but I absolutely hated it. It just was not for me. I realized this after a semester of being totally miserable and other issues that had happened. However, I knew the whole thing with my major was definitely the foundation of why I was miserable. I am incredibly happy with my Major now. It is an arts (music)-based major, and right now I have an internship as an executive assistant, but I am still quite frightened to the point where I obsess over it. To those who are more experienced in the work force-is there anything I can do to either-stop worrying; or help myself? I know it's great I love what I am doing, but my parents constantly try to nail business in my head, even though there's no way I could or would change my major again. It makes me constantly beat myself up and feel down. I do though, try to put my heart into what I do.
Thanks |

Art, Music, artistic, creative, free spirited....
Business, paperwork, mental concentration, long day.... I think because have have a creative streek in you, you will possibly want to undertake jobs such as, graphic designer, drama teacher, Managing a small jazz restaurant those types of jobs, if you become ambitious. Parents, are only trying to ensure your safety... With business, you learn to type, you learn programs on a computer, you learn, Customer Service, it allows you to obtain a receptionist job, accounts clerk, personal assistant, secretarial, even part time jobs. It allows you to have options, even in a field you don't want to be in, because so many jobs still require some form of "business" activity.. I would do a small course on secretarial, it's an asset to your future. I type 90 words a minute, run my own business in Real Estate in this horrid economy, and can run the business from Property Management to Secretarial, Data Entry to Sales if I ever had to. Why? Because my Mother made me do such a course and seriously? I ended up chosing hospitality, but eventuated in Management which needed those secretarial skills, I still need them. If I had only taken the road down the creative path, and never learnt those things, I wouldn't be where I am today... Better to have more qualifications that not enough.... CW

This is a time of transistion. It's a difficult time because dispite all the signs that we had to make changes, change was resisted for too long. Instead of gradually moving to smaller more efficient cars and homes, in the US at least, we went into a feeding frenzy and went for bigger and bigger. Now we will pay the price for a while. Just like overeating can result in a stomach ache and extra trips to the gym, we have to pay the piper for our excesses.
This is also a time of great innovation and creativity. We are seeing new technology, systems and products coming into the market. This means a great deal of opportunity for those who have the vision to meet the market's needs. Many old ideas and methods for doing business will fall by the wayside to be replaced by a more cooperative and forward looking way of working. As for your specific situation I don't know what potential it holds. One of the reasons, aside from time off to act as a caregivers and a lack of negotiation skills, that women make less money than men is because while they spend as much time in college as men and spend as much money on their education as men, they choose to study in fields that simply do not pay a living income. It's great to find and pursue what interests you and ignites your passion but if no one will pay you to do it then you will be better off keeping it as a hobby and finding some other means of supporting yourself. So, what have you been studying for? A hobby or a career? You have an intership and that argues that there is work in your field of study, it remains for you to find what will best suit the skills you have been educated in. Being positive and open to possiblities will get you much further than fear. |
