Default should i take anti-depressants?

My "counselor" said I should start taking some anti depressants. My bf had taken them before.... he said they are addicting and I don't know what to do. I don't want to be addicted to them...however they said it will make the therapy easier.

Has anyone been on anti-depressants or is on one? Are they really that addicting? How long does it take for you to be dependent on them?

I need to make a decision by Monday ... would greatly appreciate any feedback on them.

Thanks

I don't know of anyone who is on them, nor had them, but if your anxcious constantly, want to cry, can't see the light at the end of the tunnell, nothing that they say in therapy will register, you won't be listening.

If you want to give them a try ( all drugs I would imagine are addictive) ask for a lower dosage initially and ask your therapist on Monday, if you were to become addictive, what does he/she recommend to assist ween off of them, let him/or her know that fear.

I am not a believer of drugs but on the same accord, we are not strong sometimes enough to not get some outside assistance, with coping until we can be stronger.

Take care.

I am on anti-depressant. They do change the chemistry in your brain so shouldn't be something you should start and stop without a doctor's permission and guidance. Although you don't get withdrawals as you do narcotics your brain has to take time to balance it's self out if you change or stop it all together, and that can be quite a ride. But if you are so depressed that you aren't living your life, then I think it's a calculated risks. Personally I have been clinically depressed since age 16 (23 now) and literally owe my life to them.

He said when he first talked to me that i might end up being on them. he gave me prozac.

They can be addicting in Northa America they are heavily prescribed. If it is a last resort I agree get a low low dose and get out walk, run, bike whatever and help your body to balance itself out. Eat better and take better care of yourself watch your sugar and processed food intake.

good luck

i take anti depressants more for anxiety, than actual depression. i was always super anxious, had panic attacks constantly cried a lot, just from stress i feel so much better now though. my good friend was the same but very resistant to the medication, eventually she was just about a zombie because she couldnt sleep and was bearly functioning, she's now on prozac and feel better. its not perfect and wont solve all your problems but it gave the focus to change my life for the better.
take care

i guess i'm just scared and yet hopeful. from reading everyone's post it seems to quiet their minds a lot. and tbh i need that the most. sometimes i just can't stop thinking. i will continue to play out these scenarios in my head and i end up believing it and thinking that is what is real.

i am really glad im getting more of a positive feedback. thank you all so much.

ps. i also have pmdd. and i heard that it can help with that too.

I was recently prescribed Fluoxitine(Prozac), for PMDD. I only take a low dose once a day, usually bedtime. Yeah, they make me feel drowzy but with PMDD, I have been suffering from broken sleep, sometimes not sleeping at all. I have been sleeping really well since taking them. The up-shot of this is that "normal function has been resumed". Also, with this anti-depressant, I only use it for two weeks prior to mensus. I then come off it for two weeks, back on for two, and so forth. The fact that my husband cannot even begin to understand is besides the point. Only women who experience PMDD can truely understand.

I have PMDD and I am currently taking Prozac. My doctor gave it to me about 2 weeks ago. I don't really feel it yet... at least its maxium. I guess I have to give it time. This week is PMDD for me. And I've suffered from insomnia about 3 days now. And having those "anxious" thoughts.
