Starting anti depressants today and very worried about side effect but so tired of feeling so down and always depressed-maybe meds can help? if the meds work properly? I have NO idea how you feel after a few weeks of anti depressants, I hear different reviews from everyone..
Any good reviews out there on anti depressants? was always very worried to start meds. I suffer from 2 panic attacks per week and doc said she can not prescribe me anymore sedative type/addictive pills(xanax) I used to take .25 mgms at the sign of a panic attack, anyway she said the anti depressants will eventually help the anxiety and I should feel relief in 2-6 weeks depending on how my body reacts ..any input is great I just want to feel normal again..starting Celexia today
I keep hearing all these negative things about anti depressants makes me even more worried!!
    Thanks for your replies everyone

I can definitely relate with you on this. I've always been scared of possible side effects of ANY medication. I've taken about five different anti-depressants, and I've never really had any side effects from them, to be honest. I took a medication called Anafranil for obsessive-compulsive disorder, and I quit it because it just made me feel a little "off". I told my psychiatrist and now I am on Luvox. It's working great for me. I take it for depression, OCD and panic disorder. I haven't had any side effects whatsoever. You'd be surprised by how many people actually do experience side effects - the number is quite small. So, that's relieving.

People generally start to feel better from anti-depressants after taking them for roughly four to six weeks. Of course, it depends on the person and the medication. Sometimes it can be a shorter amount of time...or longer. I wish you luck with your new medication. I'm sure you will do great on it. I know it's hard to not focus on the negative possibilities, but just tell yourself that even IF you did experience some sort of effects from it, it will most likely just be drowsiness or mild nausea, and that's totally temporary and harmless. And you aren't bound to it forever. If you don't like the way it makes you feel, you can always stop taking it and find something new that works for you.

Anyway, sorry this is so long. Good luck. Try to stay positive. Starting medication is a big step and hopefully a new beginning.

I took a anti depressant..the only problem I had was when I went to get off it...if you take them for a more than a few months than try to stop you have to do it very slowly or it messes with your nerviest system...my eyes hurt and my body felt shocky...it the only way I can put it...it hurt....but as it helping for my problems I was going through a divorce and it did help me feel better and just chill out not worry about everything....it just takes about two weeks for it to really get in your system..I don't regret taking it..it did help just sucked getting off..but I did it.

    what are you on?
i've had *amazing* results with seroxat/paroxetine.

not so much prozac - did nothing, couldnt eat for a week after starting it
    effexor - HIDEOUS withdrawl.
zispin/mirtazapine - vile vile stuff made me put on about 20lbs in a month.
citalopram - again did nothing, some of my friends have had horrendous side effects from it - serious suicidal urges, not being able to sleep, the shakes.
duloxetine - caused awful nightmares and nightsweats.

hope that helps a bit x

i take effexor xr for anxiety, a low dose, just to even things out. it has made a big difference to my life. i did gain some weight, but i think that was because i started eating regularly where as before i was often too anxious or depressed. i suffered from anxiety and it had such a negative effect on my life i became depressed. i can now lead a mostly normal life. a friend of mine who took them, said they made her unable to orgasm but that hasnt been a problem for me. pm me if you have any specific questions, i would be happy to answer. they wont solve all your problems, but they will make you more able to deal with them.

No problem. I hope it does help you. It isn't fair for us to have to live like this when we CAN change it. And I'm sorry, I'm an idiot. I don't know why I said in my previous post that I'm on Luvox. I'm on Lexapro. I've taken Luvox before and had no effects from it at all. Positive or negative. Anyway, Lexapro is working great for me. I hope you can get some relief from your med. Good luck.

Eleni-well its citalopram, I am so worried about side effects and here you tellme some of your friends had suicidal thoughts yikes! were they drinking on it or something? I quit drinking(used to drink on weekends) but not since I started meds
I know everyones body chemestry is different so what works for someone may not work for another person so I gues I will continue on the meds
I know they wont solve all my problems but if I can just get rid of having 2 panic attacks a week I would be so happy, I am so sick of the anxiety, insecurities, panic attacks
I AM afraid of gaining weight
I have gained weight because I eat for comfort sometimes, however I have started working out as soon as I started my meds, AND eating healthier
I hope loosing weight is a side effect for me ...but we will see..wishful thinking
I will let everyone know how I am doing, I just started the meds last week so I will keep everyone posted..thank you everyone for your replies and Yes Happy Ending I will pm u if i have any ?'s thank you

hey there...i just started taking the same medicine also, a few days ago. i had alot of concerns about it, but figured it was worth the try then just to feel the way i've been feeling. it's been hard to get up and go. i thought when the weather got better, i would feel better. Now i'm waiting for the sun to come back out, and do some more walking. It's been raining and dreary. I've been having a dry mouth and some nausea, but the nausea has eased up. the dry mouth, well i just keep sipping on bottled water, and brush my teeth a couple times a day. and chewing on gum sometimes. i hope you get to feeling better soon. i know it's not a miracle pill. but it's a tool. have you been sleeping alot with it? i did quite a bit the first three days, but now that is tapering off. i was afraid of feeling like a zombie, but i don't feel like that at all. i guess it just takes some time to get in the system, because i still feel the same besides the side effects. i know i will give it a try for a month or so. we'll see what happens,....hang in there
