Hello WH, I recently found out that my girlfriend doesn't see herself as the beautiful young women that she actually is. When she looks in the mirror she doesn't like what she sees. When really she works out everyday and has an amazing body that she shouldn't be ashamed of. She used to be a little overweight and I still think she has the same mindset. However that's not the problem..i helped her understand how she really looks and how she shouldnt be ashamed.

My problem is she sucks in her stomach as much as she can and puts her knees on a chair and pushes her stomach against the back of the chair as much as she can because she says it makes her feel better, or that she has to do it. She constantly says she feels bloated or that her stomach hurts when we are toghether. She also says her digestion doesn't feel right and that she feels constapated sometimes & that it feels like there is fluid in the left side of her stomach when she runs. She probably goes poop every 3 days or so.. what kind of internal damage could she be causing to herself?

Ideally she should have bowel movements every day. Her diet probably needs to be healthier, including more fiber.

Just holding in her stomach won't do damage, in fact many of us do so on a regular basis.

The other thing to check, other than what Mes stated, which is true, is that she's drinking enough water. She's exersising and using all the water her body is storing so she needs at least 6 or so glasses of water a day. This will also help her go to the toilet.

She could also have IBS, irrital bowel syndrome hense bloated stomach and pain in her stomach.. This requires viewing what she is eating, usually spicy foods, too much meat, eggs, milk, will set this off and cause pain as well.

Diet of small amounts of meat, more lean white meats, chicken, fish, and loads of veg/salads, is her best bet.

Also it's important to eat breakfast for energy ...

Holding in the stomach doesn't cause any harm that I'm aware of, if anything I'd think it tightens the muscles there. I don't see why leaning stomach against a chair would be bad as you can lay on a floor on your stomach and that doesn't seem to cause problems.

My guess is she is sticking in her stomach just to try to look better, that she is sitting on her knees to keep her stomach more flat than if she were sitting hunched over, that she is hiding her stomach behind a chair rather that pressing on it. It sounds like she has extreme body image issues and someone overweight in the past is a good candidate for those.

I use to be overweight and my body is in fantastic shape now. I'd still suck in my stomach sometimes, even though there is none there. I still sit on my knees sometimes so that my stomach is feeling completely flat etc... I still look in the mirror sometimes and am not pleased with what I see. So I can sort of relate to her feelings.

Just keep complimenting her, for her beauty and for her insides. She has to learn to love herself on her own, but if you want to be supportive the best thing that you can do is remind her whenever you think about it... how much you love her for who she is.

The constipation and ever 3 day BM thing... has less to do with how she sits and more to do with her diet. I am guessing she is not eating enough fiber and not drinking enough water. Letting herself become too constipated can lead to a bowel obstruction and she should nip this in the bud quickly. Have her see her doctor so they can make sure her nutrition is well, and to find out what that fluid sound she hears or feels could be (i have no idea what that might be).

Does she take any painkillers or vitamins that are high in iron? Does she eat alot of cheese? Those are some common causes of constipation. She should trying eating much more fruits and veggies, bran muffins or cereals and drinking the water her body needs.
Scars remind us of where we've been...they don't have to dictate where we're going.
