The last place I worked blatantly skirted occupational laws all the time. Unless you sue somebody, you're basically not going to get anywhere by telling them your legal rights. It's awful, but with unemployment as high as it is, they tell you that if you don't like it, let somebody else take the job! OSHA is the American equivalent to what CW was talking about.
Why didn't the guy who got hurt on the job get worker's comp? If he hasn't sued them yet, he really should.
If a place is like that, you shouldn't feel bad for running in the opposite direction. They didn't care for you when you're on the clock, so they should EXPECT people to quit without notice! I hope you feel better and let your back do some healing!
Did the temp agency work out for you? Have you found a new second job yet?
