    Default Tablet swallowing

Okay, i am posting this in mental health, because quite frankly i think that i am mental not being able to swallow tablets at 23 years of age

Its madness, it aggravates me... i mean, i can swallow a skittle sweet or even a smartie whole...lol... but when it comes to tablets, even something so small as the birth control pill, i just cant do it.

When i had to take antibiotics, i would wrap them in something...such as banana and id happily munch on the banana, swallowing away, then i would be left with the antibiotic in my mouth and usually it would burst.... yummy.

Anyone have any tips to salvage my insanity?

Haha, no it's not funny sorry.

If you can swollow smarties, without any problems, then you more than likely as a kid, had to swollow tablets (even if you can't remember), that tasted so foul that it is ingrained in your sub-conscious, telling you every one will be the same, it was horrid then, so it will be now.

Do what the vets do, make your banana piece way smaller, silly, so you don't chew and swollow the thing...

Then drink that water so it goes "downnnnn" so there is no little bugger stuck in your throat (not a comment for another user here to add to thanks) and therefore leave you with that bitter, non-sweet taste.....

I hold a bunch of water in my mouth and tip my head back and drop the pill in and swallow. That way the dry pill never touches my mouth. Seems to be the only way I can get any pills down. Might be worth a try.

Try placing the tablet right at the back of your tongue where you can't taste it, before washing it down with water.

    Fanks all, for your responses...

CW - its not funny, its a disability ... nope, ive never been able to do it, always used to have medicine, speaking of which, i would drink a bottle of Calpol right now...Mmmm.... anyhoo, ill try the smaller piece of banana next time...hahha, and im concerned for my wellbeing - why didnt i think to take it with banana AND water.... i am dull.

Sourpuss - tried that hun, and i can feel the little bliter floating around in my mouth and it makes me wretch... and i somehow always manage to seperate it from the water...

Maz - But, i can feel it at the back of my mouth! The taste doesnt bother me, i chew paracetamol, the problem is when i have to take something with a capsule around it, as obviously i cant crunch that... ewww...

    Whats wrong with me?!

    Seriously...

It's hard to come up with a solution because you can eat a smarty, drink medicine, chew a paracetamol and sometimes it's taste, other times it is not at all, you just feel it at the back of your throat.

I truly think your own solution is smaller pieces of food, with it wrapped in it so you can simply swallow not chew... I know that's not much of one, cause you'll feel possibly a slight lump in your throat as it goes down, hense why i said water, after...

At least you can do it, better than can't at all that would be a serious health problem...

Hope you find a solution Miffed.

Miffed...I feel for you. I have the same problem, but I know what caused mine. I choked on a pill once and ever since then I freak the heck out when it comes to swallowing pills. I have it in my medical records for people NOT to prescribe me any big pills. I just cannot do it. Like yourself, I have worked with this, but I still have a heck of a time. I take a pill for blood pressure that is about the same size as a birth control pill. It's all I can do to take that on a daily basis, but taking it repeatedly does seem to be helping me some.

Good luck. If you find out something magical, please do tell.
    Cheers.

    Exclamation Try this

I understand completely what you are going through. I have panic attacks and an overactive imagination due to OCD.Face it some pills like lithium(for bipolar) and prozasin(for high blood pressure) taste terrible. I also understand the fear of choking I have choked on pills
before, and a panic attack while swallowing pills make it overwhelming!

Fortunately you DO have control if you do choke on your pills. My neighbor took a lot of her meds w/o water and the pills were stuck in her throat! She thought she would have to go to the emergency room and get them removed. My mom worked in the bakery and when she came by she fed her a lot of BREAD. Try this when you are choking-the bread will push the pills down a lot better than fluids if the pills do lodge in your throat. She was fine-and very grateful!

    Good luck!
