I have a two year old son and he recently was assessed by a developmental specialist and he's is severely delayed in all areas of his development except one where there is only a mild delay. I don't know if maybe its because I'm a bad mom and don't spend as much time with him as I could. I have another baby as well who is six months old and it just gets overwhelming. I don't really know what things I can do with my son to help his development especially speech because he still doesn't talk. We have him in a program to help him but I also want to know what I can do at home as a parent! Any suggestions?

Picture books? Books where you can say "Show mommy where the ball is." "Show mommy where the shoe is." Shapes, colors, etc.

Read to him. Drawing, coloring, etc.

Blocks (the big wood ones), let him build things.

I don't have experience with development delays, but I am a mom of two boys. Don't beat yourself up over it, he's still so young. He may just need to be stimulated differently to learn things.

What things do you do with him now?

Has his hearing been tested? My son started to talk very late and was almost impossible to understand. It turned out that while his hearing was fine at birth, he was functionally deaf most of the time due to an allergy. When I removed the problem food (diary) from his diet and got him into speach therapy and he improved rapidly.

yeah make sure its not a hearing problem
but make time to read to them both using picture books/flash cards/toys whatever you can fit in.
talk to him all the time about what is going on around him
even stupid things like 'mummy is opening the fridge - look whats in the door!'
    every bit helps.

some kids just take a while to catch up
its not in ANY way because you're a bad mum.

a family friend of ours' son has very severe learning difficulties
his mental age is never going to get above about five
he's eighteen now and has a job working on a farm looking after animals and milking cows
and he's one of the happiest people i know
