I started to feel a little anemic so I started taking Prenatal vitamins for extra iron, but someone told me that most OTC prenatal vitamins (and vitamins in general) may have the right supplements but your body cannot absorb them fully, pretty much wasting money. So I need to know where to get good vitamins. Also, I was wondering if anyone knew of a good protein supplement that isn't soy-based bc too much soy is bad for the thyroid, but most other ones i've seen are whey-based or even derived from animals. I have also tried brown rice protein but to get superior protein from it you have to use a lot of it and it ruins whatever food you add it to!

Mixing rice and lentils together creates a complete protein. I use this as my staple carb for most of my meals.

I would also recommend eating 2 Brazil nuts a day maybe as selenium intake can often be low in vegans.

I'm interested to know more about soy and its effect on thyroids though (as a soy consumer with a mother with thyroid problems)

    Hope this helps.

I have been vegan for 3 years and haven't really taken any supplements for it, i drink a lot of almond milk and eat a lot of nuts - they have a lot of protein, they have some iron too. Dark leafy greens are the best for iron though!

Prenatal vitamins are synthetic and you are correct the body does not absorb it well if at all. The cell can not use them as buildling blocks. You being a vegan want a vegan supplement to enhance and create balance. Try VitaLea w/iron.
Soy is perfectly safe for the thyroid. It's the type of soy and the process the manufacture uses. Be carefull of genetically altered or modified soy beans. Stay away from alcohol or acid washed soy beans. Soy is a complete protein. More so than any other. Don't be afraid of it. Be cautious of the company providing it. Make sure they provide a non GMO soy.
I have been using soy very successfully for 15 years.

    Lightbulb Supplements for Vegans

    Hello,

I'm new to Women's Health and have just joined the Forum. It was quite interesting to read your posting, as I am sure there are many other Vegans and Non Vegans in a similar dilemma. Eating enough fruit and veg on a daily is good for you, but , I undertsand that there is a group of "superfoods" that will provide you with a good boost of anti -oxidants and provide high levels of vitamins.

Have you considered researching into this?
