For years now, my favourite drink, coffee, has always made me feel very drowsy and sleepy, as do other caffiene drinks. Is this odd! And why?

    How much are you drinking?

Also, how much water are you drinking? Are you properly hydrated?

if its not hot, just a few cups of coffee a day and a glass of milk, not a lot else.

if its hot, probably a pint of water, 2 or 3 cups of coffee

Caffeine can dehydrate you, and a pint of water really isn't very much. Do you eat any food that has a high water content? Cucumbers, watermelons, etc? That dehydration is probably what's making you tired - trying upping your water intake and seeing if coffee still makes you sleepy.

In that case, you really do need to up your liquid intake - especially in the form of water. Whether your drinks are fizzy or not, if they're not water they aren't helping your body do what it's gotta do.
Quite frankly - your pee must be orange if you only get a pint a day!

There is a few things, first off if you have been a regular coffee drinker for a long time then you will have built up a tolerance to the drug (caffeine). You will need more of it to get the desired effect and the same goes for the withdraw of having no caffeine in your system-that can feel like a "crash".

Another thing is dehydration, coffee acts as a diuretic so it makes you pee. The more you pee the more water you lose, the more water you lose the more dehydrated and exhausted/tired you are going to feel.

Thirdly, when you drink coffee the sudden rush of caffeine will spike your blood sugar. Your pancreas does not like that so it sends out insulin to get rid of the extra sugars and in the process you body will go "back to normal" energy levels. If you continually consume coffee then your body gets used to high insulin even if it the caffeine is not present, the result is the insulin going after the 'normal' blood sugar and the symptom of that is lethargy and being generally tired.
