Hey you guys I have sort of a weird question and was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. We started buying sugar-free drink mixes instead of having juices, or Kool-aid in the house. We have been consuming the drink for quite some time. Both my husband and I have notice substantial weight gain. Now we aren't the healthiest nor the least fit people in the world. Could these mixes have an ingredient that can cause water retention? Another thing is we don't drink sodas.

From the studies I've read what happens when you eat things that have artificial sweeteners is that your body produces an enzyme when you eat something sweet that is supposed to break down the sugar. When it runs through your body and there's not sugar there, then you're left with a craving for sugar because your body is looking for it. Then what tends to happen is that we over indulge on other things to satisfy the craving. I wouldn't doubt that there is something that makes you retain water as well.

But you said substantial weight gain, so that can't be all water and it can't be all sugar free drinks either. What's your diet and exercise like?

Yes you're right. . . before I had my first child I was pretty slim and exercised a little when I had time. My diet consisted of a variety of things from junk to healthy. I breastfed after my child was born and when I stopped I noticed weight gain coming on rapidly. I understand that when you are breastfeeding alone you burn 500calories. But the thing is everything was the same (diet and exercise) from when I became pregnant before so I don't understand where it really all came from My husband did the same thing. The thing we could think of was that after the baby we switched to sugar free. But I do agree with you it all just can be from the drinks so I guess I need to really look at what I am eating and figure out a good exercise routine.
