From the studies I've read what happens when you eat things that have artificial sweeteners is that your body produces an enzyme when you eat something sweet that is supposed to break down the sugar. When it runs through your body and there's not sugar there, then you're left with a craving for sugar because your body is looking for it. Then what tends to happen is that we over indulge on other things to satisfy the craving. I wouldn't doubt that there is something that makes you retain water as well.
But you said substantial weight gain, so that can't be all water and it can't be all sugar free drinks either. What's your diet and exercise like?

My husband did the same thing. The thing we could think of was that after the baby we switched to sugar free. But I do agree with you it all just can be from the drinks so I guess I need to really look at what I am eating and figure out a good exercise routine.
