    Default Calcium and Vitamin D

My nanna has been told by her doctor to make sure she gets more calcium and vitamin D in her diet, but we're not really sure what you find them in. Obviously we know milk has calcium and some margarines have Vitamin D. We have also seen that oily fish are good for them both, but I was just wondering if anyone could suggest any other foods which are high in either calcium or vitamin D?

Taking a calcium supplement with vitamin D (always found in pharmacies) in it is a good source in case you cannot keep up with finding new foods.

Vitamin D can be found in eggs, cheese, mushrooms, oily fish, and orange juice.

Calcium can be found in dairy products, tofu, pinto beans, chickpeas, almonds, sardines, oats, oranges, rutabaga/swede, bok choy and sea cucumber.

I definitely know that kale is very high in calcium, as are brazil nuts. I use kale every morning in my breakfast smoothie and I also try to juice it as often as possible in my juicer. A couple of kale leaves (with stems) and a couple of brazil nuts supply as much calcium as 1200 mg supplements. Also, I don't think our bodies absorb the calcium supplement you buy over-the-counter. Another amazing form of calcium is camu-camu powder. You will have to Google it to see where you can buy it. It's calcium in it's true form. Sunshine provides vitamin-D.

if you buy the calcium supplement with Vitamin D, your body will absorb the calcium (since the Vit D helps the body absorb and use the calcium we ingest).

Sunshine does cause the body to create vitamin D, but usually people are just not outside enough to get the vitamin D our bodies require - not to mention those of us in the upper northern hemisphere don't get strong enough sunlight during the winter for our bodies to be able to create the vit D. BUT there are foods that are high in D as well, just like with calcium... fortified dairy products, and fatty fish or cod liver oil are all very high in this vitamin.

I agree with ItsASecret. My sister had been diagnosed with Vitamin D Deficiency last year. A good alternative for foods is the in-take of supplement. The one that my sister used to take is a MX Vitamin D that contains 1000 IUs of vitamin D3 cholecalciferol. As far as i know, a particular person should need to aim for an optimal amount of 1000 IUs for daily dose of vitamin D3 cholecalciferol to ensure that the body gets the best possible amount of vitamin D to reduce the risk of vitamin D deficiency symptoms without having to overexpose to UV radiation and sunshine. Hope this info helps. Too late to answer but for the sake of other people who've the same concern as you.
