    Default Gluten Free

    I get random thoughts about this type of thing...so last night while lying in bed I thought "Hmm...I'd like to try gradually going gluten free". I'm not allergic to gluten, but there seem to be a lot of health benefits to those who steer clear of it. It's going to require some definite changes on my part, but I think I can do it. I started researching foods that are gluten free and the lists are quite extensive (which is a good thing!!). Are any of you gluten free? Any advice for my journey?

    Gluten free... Is no fun at all! It's been two years of it for me, I'm intolerant. When I first switched my diet I lost 10 pounds and got excited! But after a few months of the weight being gone it started to come back. Its not a hard diet ... Until u want to go out to eat, or in my case get a preggo craving for cheese burgers and chicken mcnuggets. If your married then no that you will have to buy extra food, regular good for him and family, and gf for you. Its expensive, some of the food is okay but seriously if your just looking at gf as a diet go on a diet, don't go crazy with cutting everything out and trying to make everyday gluten foods gf. It's not worth it and has extra carbs and calories.

    Darling - thanks for the info. Going gluten free for someone who HAS to is definitely different than someone just doing it for health benefits. I don't eat red meat (once or twice a year max) so cheeseburgers, hamburgers and things like that won't be an issue. Though you can still have a good hamburger you just can't have a regular bun. After looking up more info on it, it seems that most of what I'm eating currently is already gluten free. I'm seeking out some snack items to replace current non gluten free snacks, but that are high in protein. I also think alot of people don't utilize all their gluten free options, like Quinoa which is full of fiber and protein and LOTS of nutrients, but is totally gluten free. For me, since I'm not intolerant to gluten, I'm not going to freak out if I have some soy sauce or something like that but am going to try to replace the things I eat regularly that contain gluten.

    I don't need to lose weight so I'm solely dabbling in this to test out the potential health benefits. I found that on sites like Amazon you can buy some really good gluten free stuff in bulk for very reasonable prices.

    I'm kind of excited about the challenge.

    Going totally Gluten free, from my point of view, isn't worth it. It can be tough to find gluten free foods, and to do it day in and out can be hard. Also, like said above, eating out is an issue, as even most salad dressings have gluten in them. I worked in a restaurant for years, and gluten was always difficult (generally they had to do rice with a chicken breast with salt and pepper - which is fine, but not really something you want to eat when you go out).

    Also, if you are already eating pretty much gluten free, I don't think you'd see lots of effects in the long run from it. Also, I would ensure you take vitamins/nutrients as well, to supplement things that a gluten free diet doesn't have (ie. iron, folate, fiber). And also, be warned if you go back to a gluten filled diet, you may pack on the pounds, as your body has adjusted and your intestinal tract ends up changing to absorb more --- when you switch back, it takes your body time to revert back.

    Have you read up on the Paleo Diet?

    My Fiance has Celiac disease, and tries to eat a Gluten Free diet to a degree. Doesn't stop him though splurging out on pork belly Although some breads definately upset his digestive system.

    I think it's a good thing BD, the essence being that you are eating healthier, non greasy, no fast foods, that has to be good for you.

    I do agree that a pure Gluten Free diet does lose some valuable nutrients or vitamins hense the suggestion of the Paleo Diet, the books explains this in depth...

    I did the Paleo thing for a while and am trying to get myself back on it. I found it very beneficial during the time I was on it. And honestly I didn't feel deprived at all. The only thing was being prepared, and with the bar exam, I found myself resorting to frozen meals and the occassional Fast Food to get by, but the Paleo has worked wonders for people I know that have stuck to it long term. I got a good book on it, but I can't call the name, but I can email you when I get home if you'd like

    I try to do it.
    I figured out where I was getting the most gluten, and replaced it with gluten free items or eliminated it.

    Grains = Quinoa
    Pasta = Rice pasta

    If I go to a restaurant, they hate me, but I special order.
    Get steamed/sauteed veggies with a piece of grilled chicken.

    example:
    Olive garden = Sauteed/Steamed Zucchini and squash with a side of mushroom risotto.
    The rice might/probably does have it, but it lacks 101 ingredients because it is so simple.

    Interesting stuff. KY, I remember when you were first talking about the Paleo Diet.

    I'm not really interested in going 100% gluten free. I'm not intolerant of gluten, so I'm not going to freak out if I'm out to eat and someone puts some soy sauce on my food. For me it's more just finding the gluten items I eat MOST frequently and finding a good gluten free replacement.

    Nutrient deficiencies are an issue for those on a 100% gluten free diet. But I think that's because people don't research their foods. Quinoa is gluten free and contains MUCH higher nutrients than any other grain you could eat. Things like adding spinach to your diet, adding it into smoothies, etc.

    Aryn - good for you, sticking to your nutrition despite whether you're out to eat or not!!!

    I'm going to have to read up on the Paleo diet more.

    This may sound horrible, but I probably couldn't go gluten free either.
    I do buy gluten free pasta, rice or Quinoa. That is a huge source right there cut out. I am still getting 'spaghetti', but without the gluten.

    I also have my 'fat friday food' as we call it here, and that is mexican food. I work out, I regulate my diet well through the week and know I have that splurge day to look forward to
