I quit drinking for 6 months to test this theory about weight loss. I also filled my "drinking nights" with a walk instead or other form of workout. My skin bgan to glow and is firmer all around. I believe this is primarly because Alcohol dehydrates you. Test it for yourself and see what happens. Bonus- you save $ on going out with the girls and get to laugh at your pals when they get a little tipsy!

Unfortunately alcohol is a toxin to the body. Yes, there may be minimal benefits from red wine, or at least that is what is claimed (resveratrol, etc) but it is still a toxin that the liver needs to process. In my opinion, risks outweigh (pun) the benefits. I haven't had a drop in about six years, and I sleep better, feel better, than ever before, and it unquestionably contributed to more body fat on my frame.

    Just my three cents.

That is what alcohol dehydrogenease is for. Simply metabolism.

but it is still a toxin that the liver needs to process.
Everything that passes through the liver is thought by the body to be a potential toxin or hazard until it has been fully filtered. Simply being in the liver does not mean it is automatically a bad thing, it is simply a process that must occur to rid the body of the actual toxins produced by simple metabolism and the liver does a great job of riding of toxins. Drinking a beer during dinner is not a bad thing by any means. Your metabolism is set up in such a way that there is hardly a thing to worry about unless the consumption is greater than the metabolic rate, in which case you can get alcohol poisoning but the average Joe is not going to get to that point.
There are those who believe that dictionaries should not merely reflect the times but also protect English from the mindless assaults of the trendy.

So many wise tips were given here already. Moderation, moderation, moderation is all I can add.
If you find something too hard to do, it's very likely that you won't stick to it.

In other words, if you want to lose weight, but enjoy alcohol, try to have a drink once in a while, but when you have it - enjoy it fully, and the next day go back to your weight-watching schedule.

    Just my 2 cents...

I drink like nobody's business... Nah but seriously I can drink a lot if I want too.. And I have been losing weight whilst still going to the pub - however I have started drinking white wine as opposed to beer (unless I am in a specialist beer place where the beer is so good that it is worth anything really)
I think it is the every day routines that need to change as opposed to the 1-2 nights a week when you go out for a drink. See, you need to have fun too or you will lose your motivation. (Not saying that drinking is the only road leading to fun but I sure think it is one of them)

For some reason, I never liked the taste of alcohol. It's loaded with calories.
