Does anyone use any kind of shake/drink as a supplement? I just started one along with my workouts about a week ago. I'm not sure if the shake is helping or if I just gained so much more energy from working out. It doesn't seem to fill me up as much as I'd like to. I started added a spoonful of peanut butter to it that seemed to do the trick. I just don't know if I should continue with this? I've been replacing one meal a day with it because I don't eat very well the way it is. I figure it is truly the healthiest meal of the day.

I sometimes do a drink in the morning because I go to work at 5am. I NEED something to consume, but don't have the time/effort to put into a big meal.

    My blended drink:
    1cup berries (no sugar added)
1/4 cup OJ (we have a juicer, but odwalla makes a good OJ)
    1 banana
1 scoop of Super Green supplement

You can Google different super green supplements and find a variety available.

I have, in the past, used the GNC vanilla whey powder and made shakes. If you find a good combination, they are not bad and their are TONS of recipes online.

Also, one of our Mods (I miss Mes!) has posted the below "Green Smoothie" recipe before, GREAT for energy!

    - A frozen banana (frozen fruits are great because they give it that smoothie consistency that you might expect from an ice cream shake or something)
    - A handful of frozen strawberries
    - Couple of spoonfuls of flax seeds (which are very beneficial)
    - A handful of spinach leaves (this gives it that green color without actually making it taste like vegetables)
    - Half a cup or more of water

Actually that makes more than one cup of smoothie, but whatever, it's nice to go for seconds.

If you want it to be more filling, add some soy or regular milk instead of water.

And play with the combinations. Try carrots, apples, lettuce... When you pass that section in the grocery store, just think about the creative ways you can combine certain things.

In the past I've also added some maple syrup to make it extra sweet, but I find that it's usually not necessary.

Check out this smoothie thread I made a while ago, there are lots of good options here for you to try - high in nutrition, low in calories, and will fill you up and give you energy.

My favorite is the spinach smoothie!

    Thumbs up

I use the Body by Vi protein shake – it’s a patented Tri-sorb Protein that is a unique blend of 3 highly absorbable proteins. It consists of a Non GMO Soy base and whey concentrate. It also contains Fibrasol that keeps you full for a while.

** The FDA actually allows it to be called a 'fat loss accelerant' as a result, it is the only protein that can use that claim. Visalus proteins have been specially processed to remove estrogen, fat, lactose, and carbs.

I have been replacing 2 meals a day for the past 3 months with this phenomenal shake in order to lose weight and go back to my pre-pregnancy state. I feel like a million bucks on it.

The FDA does not regulate the "vitamin and supplement' industry, therefore, they do not "allow" any company to claim anything.

On the contrary, IF the manufacturer is adhering to federal law, they have to state clearly in all ads and on all labeling that "the FDA has not approved these statements..."(or something similar).

If you are choosing to consume a 'meal replacement shake' in place of a well balanced meal and are not staying 'full' long enough, try to find one that contains more fiber and/or protein. Fiber makes you feel full and protein helps too, as it takes longer for the body to digest (when compared to carbohydrates).

Your body is a temple....treat it accordingly!

The content of a Body by Vi shake per 1 serving:
    Calories 90
    Total Fat 1g 2%
    Saturated Fat 0g 0%
    Cholesterol 15mg 5%
    Sodium 75 mg 3%
    Total Carbs 7g 2%
    Dietary Fiber 5.5g 22%
    Protein 12g 24%

No other protein shake mix on the market has such a low content of sodium and sugar, and such a high degree of fiber.

And yes - ViSalus products do not need to be approved by the FDA, as they are nutritional supplements and not drugs. The statement about what FDA “allows” comes from Ms. Audrey Sommerfeld who is on the Scientific Advisory Board of Visalus Sciences.

Hope that makes more sense. Thanks for your comment Seeker_Advice

So much depends on exactly what it is you're drinking...I'm curious to know what's in the shake, specifically how much sugar and caffeine may be in it that gave you the energy, then the carb count, sweetener source, and protein source. I personally always steer away from the artificially flavored shakes out there. Unfortunately, so many of the "shake" products out there...at least in my opinion...are just awful products, loaded with so much junk that I couldn't bare to gag them down.

So the option for me was to make my own. I always throw some greens in (or a wholefood green powder), and then use a really clean whey powder and that's about it for me, and works really well. I bring it to the gym with me so I can get the protein in immediately after the workout, during that 45 minute to two hour window when the body is starving most for protein.
