Hello everyone!
I am 19 years old and am starting my freshman year of college in a couple of weeks. I want to begin school with a new healthy nutrious diet. As of right now I do not eat 3 meals a day and the meals I do eat are not very good. I was wondering if any of you could suggest a healthy eating diet for me with vitamins or supplements too. I am a very thin girl about 105 pounds and am trying to gain weight. Please respond fast! I would be grateful for your feedback! Thank You. |

since your so young I dont think you need vitamins or any stuff like that because your body already makes some of it. Are you living in a dorm room? If so, try to buy a little fridge and eat your fruit and veggies. Watch the freshman 20, which is usually what the average college student will gain in their first year.
Adopt a healthy lifestyle by being familiar with your gym and going every time you can. Small steps can make a huge difference. I've been through the whole college experience, so don't make fast food your only source of food lol. This is gonna be an A-mazing journey i loved my college years

I have a daughter who is your age so I know how busy college life will be for you! Try to eat 3 square meals a day with plenty of fruits and vegetables. If you are not able to manage that, make sure you have a good breakfast at least. I would suggest you take a Phys Ed class if you can squeeze it in.

Don't know where you are going to college but my oldest, found the diet situation there frightening, it seemed that most of the girls she met in the dorm had eating disorders! They would go in the bathroom together to help each other throw up. She declined the offer to join them saying she prefers to digest her food. Watch who you befreind.
Multi vitamins have been found to cause problems in healthy people, it's best to stick with a nutrient dense diet. Reasonable portions of healthy food, eating several small meals is better for you than a couple of large ones. If you skip eating too ofte nyou body will go into a starvation mode and try to save calories to survive the famine - you could actually gain weight! Keep things like organic bananas and apples for a quick pick me up. Raw nuts, like walnuts, cashews and pecans are a good snack - they are a healthy fat but don't go overboard. Water is always your best drink. A treat now and then helps you keep a positive attitude. |

It's hard because college students are not familiar with the word routine. I tried to fix my eating habits this summer but when school resumed, i couldn't stick to my summer diet and work out schedule. I'm also addicted to coffee! Right now, I'm trying to drink less coffee and substitute it with tea or orange juice. But maybe you have an advantage cause you can start healthily now...

Watch the coffee cost trap. One of the Universities, think it was Wash, did a study a couple years ago. The average US college student graduates with about $30k in debt outside student loans and U of W found that $6000 of that was for coffee! They started a program to get students to buy an inexpensive coffee maker and save all that money. I don't care for coffee but my daughter does, I got her a $300 Krups that does cappochino and espresso for $12 at Goodwill, it works great.
Not being into a routine makes the several small meals a better plan. Yogurt, cheese, peanut butter, fresh fruits, carrots and jicama to munch on. There's a lot of good stuff if you take a look. I'll bet there's a natural foods store around campus somewhere, that's a good place to start. Coffee is certainly better for you than soda! It does have some health benefits but you know that thing about too much of a good thing? Moderation is key. |

Good nutrition is important. You need all the energy and concentration levels to be able to cope with life and academics in college. If you're not able to keep a good diet, look for a supplement which will help you get all the essential nutrition you need. I would suggest you go for something which is made of natural ingredients since the body is able to more easily absorb these and make maximum use of it. And it's always healthier to choose natural. I would like to get a supplement for my daughter as well. Any suggestions from anyone?

I have been searching online for natural-based supplements. There seem to be many good ones available. But I'd like to hear from someone who has actually used the product. I take one called Greens plus..it gives me super energy, very nutritious and tastes awful!
When I was in college i found it hard to eat my lunch cause there were always other "yummy" foods in the cafeteria. But if you have a microwave that you can use, then not only can you bring your lunch and heat them up but you'll also be able to save a load of dollars. Fish oil supplements are really great for your brain as well. and make sure you get enough sleep. Hope that helps. |
