I figured since it would be painful no matter what, then I might as well chose the more natural-looking option. Can anyone help me confirm or dispell my curiosity? Are breast implants stiff? Do they loosen up? Are there visible outline-indentation at the edges of the implants? Has anyone had them placed under the chest muscle?

I know it's been awhile since the OP asked, but I figured this would still be helpful. I've had my implants for almost 4 1/2 years now, and they are placed under the muscle. About a week post-op, the implants were fairly stiff and high on the chest. After a couple of months, they started to settle in and lower to a natural position. Since mine are under the muscle, the actual outline of the implants themselves can't be made out. However, if I look at them from a profile view, I can somewhat make out where the implants are and where my real breast tissue is on top. The implants themselves are not soft and don't "loosen up", but the amount of breast tissue you have can help "pad" the implants. Also, settling of the implants help take away from the stiffness. I went from not even a 34A to a 34C. Since then, my natural breast tissue has grown to what is probably a 34A (couldn't tell you for sure, had the surgery when I was 16 and not fully grown), so there is some breast tissue that takes away from a "stiff" look. Though if I lie down, the implants still look fairly natural but feel very hard. However, a nurse did compliment on what a great job my doc did during a breast exam 2 months ago lol! Hope that answers some curious minds. Feel free to ask if anyone has any more questions!
Btw, sub-muscle surgery is no joke. IMO, waking up after surgery was the worst pain I have ever felt to this day (then again, I've never gone through childbirth).
