I am very prone to getting UTI's due to a small deformity in my ureters, I've gotten them my whole life, I'm used to them. However a few days ago I found out that I'm pregnant. I get up to use the rest room this morning, and I'm pretty sure ( actually pretty positive) That I have a UTI. I can't get in to see my doctor till next week at the earliest. I'm not sure what to! Should I wait to see my DR., normally I would, cause it's not that big of a deal to me. I'm just not sure about the baby. Should I go to the E.R or an Urgent care center? Will the infection hurt the baby if I wait to go to the doctor?

UTI's are more likely to happen between week 12-24 of pregnancy because of changes to the urinary tract. It won't affect your baby as long as the condition is treated early with antibiotics (antibiotics won't affect you or the baby).

Drink plenty of fluids i,e; water and unsweetened cranberry juice especially will help. Try not to drink or eat anything too sugary.

The above things may help untill you can get to see your doctor, however it is important that your doctors treats this quickly, so call your doctors again and explain that you are pregnant and have a UTI, maybe they can fit you in sooner. If not then by all means go to the urgent care centre.

    Congratulations on your wonderful news

Actually, anti-biotics can affect the baby, by killing good bacteria in your digestive system, therefore not being as regular, and in turn causing more UTI's. I have constant UTI's when I am pregnant. Mine are caused by the fact that I am normally very constipated, and when I'm pregnant I am more constipated. That bacteria gethers in your digestive system, then spreads, causing infections. I was on anti-biotics constantly while using a doctor for my first pregnancy. With my second, I used a mid-wife and it was so much better. When my UTI's started she told me to take D-Mannose for the UTI, a whole food Calcium Magnesium (preferably New Chapter brand), and a good Acidophilus for the digestion. I never had another UTI as long as I took these. The D-Mannose is the sugar in Cranberry that helps the infection in a concentrated form. It will save you from having to be on anti-biotics while pregnant.

Also, the infection will only hurt the baby, if it continues to get worse and spreads to your kidneys, then it can start to hurt the baby. I would start taking the natural remdies as early as possible to prevent this. But by no means do I believe you need to rely on the anti-biotics to take care of this unless you cannot keep the UTI's under control yourself.
