Its very very important that you talk to your doctor and a nutritionist about this. When you are overweight during a pregnancy, you can watch to not eat junk food and unecessary things so that you don't gain an excessive amount of weight...but you will need to gain some weight in order to have a healthy baby. Also restrictring nutrients can have an effect on your developing babies brain as well as physical development.

Because of all thats going on in your body you need more calories than usual but as long as you make sure to make your food count, as in eating healthy meals and snacks with lots of nutrients vs cupcakes and candybars your body shouldn't pack on an unhealthy amount of weight during pregnancy but your body will need to gain weight to account for the baby etc.

Please do not try to diet/cut calories or deprive yourself during this time... do seek out the help of your doctor for advice on ways to be more healthy during your pregnancy... but don't sacarafice your newborns chances at being as healthy as can be in order to reduce pounds at this time.

Doesn't mean you have to go crazy and eat everything in sight, but definitly don't restrict nutrition and go hungry... it can be so harmful.

I hope you talk your doctor for advice on what you specifically should be doing to ensure a healthy baby and safe delivery, while also not gaining more than you need to.. you can start picking up healthier eating habits now and work on focusing on those more closely after the birth of your baby.

It would be worth your time and money to hire a nutritionist to map out a plan for you.
If you're already overweight, you won't need to gain any but like HD said, dieting and restricting could not be the best idea right now.

Keep a detailed food diary for the next week so you can take it in to the nurtritionist and they'll have something to work with. You can still be active during your pregnancy so make sure you get out and move around everyday for walks and things, that will help as well.

This is a must. If I read right, you are just PLANNING to get pregnant - you are NOT pregnant YET? If that is the scenario, then making sure you have the ideal weight and fitness to nourish a baby in your womb is a must.

Too much restrictions to your food intake is not good, balance is what you should seek. Do what Sourpuss said about a food log and take it to a doctor or nutritionist so you can plan.

Being overweight and having a baby is as risky as being underweight, so I'm glad you are addressing that now.

Practice on eating healthy food and take out junk food in the equation. Avoid drinking your calories, eat small servings of meals at least 5 to 6 times a day. Drink sufficient amount of water, get enough rest, and do some walking/cardio.

    P.S.

DURING pregnancy, any food restrictions should only be limited to junk food or any other food deemed by your doctor harmful to you and/or your baby.

Don't be afraid to gain weight during pregnancy, just make sure that the weight gain is within the healthy range. Worry about losing weight later once your body is ready for it. Breastfeeding will hasten your weight loss actually.

It is possible that if your pregnancy is a catalyst to eating healthier and starting an appropriate exersize program, you could lose fat even though you are gaining with the pregnancy and you could be fairly static on the scales. Cut out the soda, fried foods, chips, sweets and start with plenty of salads (spinach or romaine), lean meats (hormone free) veggies and natural fruits.

Start establishing these better eating habits for youself and your family and once that comes you should find yourself well on the way to a healthier, slimmer you.

    Hey All,

Thank you so much for sharing such an excellent piece of information. It really worth a lot to me. I will consult a doctor and get advice about my diet. If I follow the diet, I think my weight will not increase. But do I have chances to lose weight because of my delivery? I think generally women lose some weight during delivery time. When my first kid was born, after delivery I lost my weight to some extent. But later I gained a lot of weight because I didn't follow any diet. But now I diet and try to reduce my weight but it's not reducing. I am the same 78 kg from last 5 years. So I thought if I go for a second child with proper diet, chances are there to lose weight and from there on I can stick to strict diet so that I can maintain my health.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hey All,

Thanks again for all the information provided by you. Now I am mentally prepared to go for second child. I really don't exercise for a long time. I just go for a walk for 15 to 20 mts and that too not everyday.I am a working women and I really don't have time to do exercise. But my intake of junk food is really less. I don't take sweets . But still I have not lost weight so far. I thought if I go for a second child with proper diet and exercise I may lose some pounds post pregnancy. But I am not sure whether I will lose weight or again I will stick on to my usual weight 78 kgs. Let's see.

If you only have time for 20 minutes of walking, just make it more intense. Pick up the pace for 30 seconds and walk as fast as you possibly can. Then back to a basic brisk walk...and so on.

Make sure you're actually walking with effort. Don't just go out for a stroll. And see if you can fit another day or two a week in. I think everyone has an extra 20 minutes a day somewhere that they can dedicate to their health.

    good luck
