I've been told many times before that it often takes several months of trying before you actually conceive. Why is this? Is it only because of going off birth control?

My husband and I aren't TTC yet, but I'm just wondering because we may within the next 5-6 months.

The actual window to conceive is pretty small. And even then, everything has to be just right. For some people it only takes once, for some it takes years of trying.
The best thing to do is keep track of your cycle and have a lot of sex when you are ovulating and most fertile.

    Good luck.

You only have about a 25% chance of conceiving during each cycle. It's really just luck of the draw.
The timing of sex has to be just right and you have to get a healthy egg and sperm at the same time.
I went off birth control to conceive my first child and it took a little over a year.
Then, it only took a month and a half to conceive our second.

Sometimes even the best planner won't conceive for months. sometimes its the stress of trying and not getting pregnant, and sometimes it is other factors. There is truly only one day a woman can get pregnant, that is the day she ovulates. having sex three days before that, two days, one day before and the day of, than the day after and the day after and the day after that is a good way to ensure that you get pregnant. However it can take several months to know when you ovulate, even with the advance in modern technology. There are many factors in the difficulties of TTC but they are worth the headache. When you find out you are expecting many other waves of emotions fall into the mix. So when you are ready to try patience and calmness are key. Oh yeah and knowing your body helps too.
