I had an elected medical abortion 4 weeks ago and went to my follow up appointmet yesterday. I still had a positive pregnancy test (HCG level 42,000) and the ultrasound showed retained tissues (productions of conception, most likely being the placenta). The Dr assures me that there is no baby or viable pregnancy, just some left over tissues. The Dr wants me to have a D&C fairly quickly to clear my uterus of the left over tissues. I have a tilted (retroverted) uterus and he said that due to this anatomical issue, it makes the initial abortion more difficult; therefore, causing an increased risk of retained tissues. I had the abortion fairly early in the pregnancy, appx 5-6 weeks. I have absolutley no signs or symptoms of the retained products, where as most people have heavy bleeding, cramping and fever. So, I am seeking information from others, to see if anyone has ever had (or heard of) this type of post abotion issue. Did my Dr become complacent and not perform the abortion properly or was it just due to me being so early in the pregnancy AND having a tilted uterus? I am very nervous that the D&C will still not get everything and I will have further complications. I also fear having scar tissue develop and that impacting future sucessful pregnancies. Advice, suggestions, information of any kind will be greatly appreciated!!!!
I don't know about it in this specific situation but I've had 2 D&C. One was 2 years ago and followed by a ablation, that does essentially seal the uterine interior. But I had one much earlier in life, don't even remember why now but it was not a big deal and I had two children later on. I also have a tilted uterus.
So long as your doctor is competent I don't think you have much to be worried about.
