A day till the 3rd through 5th, depending on the length of your period (menstruation), you are sterile, so there is no conceiving on that time. That's actually how I naturally did my birth control until I did my tubal ligation that I am now regretting. Go to your OB-Gyn and have her show you how to chart out your ovulation period so you can conceive. Aside from that, you might want to have your hormonal levels checked and have your hubby be checked as well.

Saying that anybody is sterile at any time in their cycle is really dangerous - everyone's different. Unless you're charting and know at what point you're ovulating, you can get pregnant at any time during your cycle.
There are actually two cycles - uterine and ovarian. They're not necessarily in tune. So you can be menstruating and pop an egg right out!
The best thing you can do for yourself when trying to get pregnant is to breathe Look up natural family planning and base temperature, start trying to chart your ovulation, and do the deed during those times. Obviously, there's a lot more to it, but I didn't get that far into it.
    Good luck!

If you don't take into the equation the fact that sperm can live up to 5 days (some people say longer) in the uterus, you could end up unexpectedly pregnant. You can have sex when you are not ovulating and have pregnancy occur from still living sperm when you ovulate a few days later. The egg lives from about 24 hours to 48 hours, from what I have read. So if you want to become pregnant, it isn't bad to start a little early. It is probably best to have sex with the guy climaxing with ejaculation at least every other day. Google [Calendar-based contraceptive methods] and think of it in the reverse way to be ready when you ovulate and even have a little bit stored.

If you are wanting to get pregnant. Do a search for Ovulation Calendars. My Husband and I are trying to get pregnant and it helps keep track of my cycle. It takes a few months to get it on track but it helps key you into your body if you don't know the signs of ovulation.
