Default Problem with what the doctor told me

Okay so I'm nine weeks along and before I went into the room one of my friends was telling me that I needed to get rid of my cat because of a parasite and well I asked my doctor he just said not to handle the litter.

Now my friend is freaking out because her mom told her that the doctor shouldn't have told me that and that I need to get rid of this cat because it will drag litter everywhere and I'll get this parasite. I'm confused because she's a close friend but the cat isn't even mine it's my fiance's and we don't know any one who will take her and I'm agaisnt leaving her outside...so what should I do? I mean it even says online to not handle the little that's it...

It's the litter. You are fine having a cat, just be sure to not come in contact with the litter. For the rest of your pregnancy, it is your fiance's job to handle all litter box duty.

Yes it's just the litter, it carries parasites called toxoplasmosis that can cause serious harm to a fetus. You can still play with and cuddle your cat just her litter is off limits, I guess your fiance is on litter duty for the next several months Just remember to keep her litter box away from the kitchen and your bedroom also have your husband wash his hands really well after dealing with your kitty's litter.

You are fine. Just have your husband clean out the litter box.

Millions of households have cats, millions of pregnant women are around them - there's no danger. Just don't clean the litter as other have said! I'll see if I can merge your two threads, you only need one hun.

-Darling.. I used to work as a microbiologist and kitty litter has a parasite called toxoplasmosis that can cause serious issues such as mental retardation/blindness and other serious issues to a fetus at any stage of a woman's pregnancy, it's very rare but i've heard of 1 case in the hospital where it has happened, considering there are millions of pregnant cat owners and millions of children being born at the hospital i work at, it's rare.. In your case the parasite travels from litter to human host through any opening in the body but most commonly hand to mouth contact. Since your husband is not home use rubber gloves and throughly wash your hands after cleaning the litter, it should be fine.

The condition Toxoplasmosis is definitely rare. You could eat kitty litter and not get infected (people, please do not do this you will get other infections lol). That is not to say it does not happen, that protozoa can be in the litter if the cat is infected. However not all felines are infected, outdoor cats are much more prone to contracting the parasite. Even if a person does come into contact with the parasite I believe that the parasite itself does not live long if exposed to high temperatures, like if you wash your hands in hot water.

    That's an excellent added tip.

like if you wash your hands in hot water.
I can not believe what they make these days that can harm someone, or a fetus, why isn't this written on the kitty litter packages, or is it?

No wonder you ladies freaked out having been told of that.

The main problem honestly with cats is they love warmth and therefore, keeping them away from your baby whilst sleeping in a cot is the most dangerous thing they can do, that and a naughty scratch...

Add the washing your hands in any event, after patting your cat just for the feeling of feeling safe, but seriously cats are okay....
