The chances are lower, when it wasn't intercourse.
Although in articles I've read, doctors don't rule it out as a possible way of getting pregnant.
Sperm dies when it hits the air, but how long it takes to actually die isn't known. The sperm will also still be viable if his hands have been wet or damp, because it create's a temperature.
I don't know anyone it has happened too, but it makes good practice to wash your hands inbetween.
