    Exclamation Episiotomy

Question for those moms who've had an episiotomy that required stitches - what happened to your stitches? Did they fall out or were they taken out? How long were you uncomfortable after being stitched up?

I had a procedure done recently that was like an episiotomy, and this morning while cleaning the area I found a little clump of stitches on the cleansing cloth where the doctor tied them off. Is that supposed to happen? I'm only nervous because I started to think the area was getting infected; it was very itchy and madly sore the last few days and then this morning I woke up and found blood, and the stitches were in the blood.

I've already called the doctor but he won't be getting back to me for another few hours.

    Thanks!

I would think that they would absorb...When I had my kids I was stitched each time..They hurt like the devil but they were absorbed...Yours must be very tender in that area and if they have been in for a week or so may just be breaking loose and healing...I just don't know......Caroline

Mine were absorbed. Some do not absorb, the docs take them out. They suppose to tell you what kind of stitches they are. Mine took a while to absorb though, i still felt it after a month or so. Be sure to ask the doc.

    Thank you, ladies.

I did call the doctor, and he didn't call back right away, which to me meant it wasn't an emergency. Then when we spoke he said it was good that they came out; the sooner the stitches fell out, the softer my skin would stay. I see two different types of thread; black, and then something yellowish and prickly, like fishing line. That's what came out this morning, a tiny tied bundle of that.

And even though I was sore for a bit, I am walking around much easier today, so I am glad it worked itself out. I see two other areas with the same type of stitching, so I'll just wear a panty liner or something so I don't start bleeding profusely in public if one of the other ones comes loose!!

I go to him Tuesday for my two-week post-op, so I'm sure things will continue to resolve until then. I was just scared this morning.

    Thanks for replying.
