You can cook food without foil or any pots or pans if you think out the process correctly. As a teenager, I experimented with potatoes and corn in an open fire. I got wet seaweed from the lake and wrapped it around the food, then created a shell of clay soil. Then I tossed the whole thing in the fire and let it cook for a long time. The fire doesn't have to consume a lot of wood, but it does have to have enough coals. The food came out great. My younger sister expanded on my experiments and got quite good at cooking without pots and pans. Of course, a lot of meat can be barbecued on sticks. Fish could be cooked the same as potatoes.

Corn can be cooked more directly on the fire with only all of its husks. It may work better to soak the corn in water first. Put it near the coals, but not on them. You can use heated rocks to maintain temperature instead of coals. You can dig a pit and put the corn in it and heap heated rocks on the top.

When camping with a group everyone brings a can of something(soups, veggies, chili etc.),we put it all in one pot, good stuff. Also you can cut up chicken and put in foil with carrots, potatos, onions, pour cream-of chicken soup over it ,wrap up tight and put on the coals.

    Camping time!!!

Here are some wonderful dutch oven recipes...

    Dutch Oven Cinnamon Pull Aparts

    2 packages refrigerator biscuits
Ziploc bag with 2/3-cup sugar and ¾ teaspoon cinnamon
    1/3-cup butter

    Start charcoal (24+)

    Line dutch oven with foil.

Melt butter in bottom of oven.

Cut biscuits in half or quarters and drop in bag with sugar/cinnamon. Shake until coated.

Place biscuits in oven-spread them out evenly. Dump rest of sugar from Ziploc onto top of biscuits. Bake covered with 8 coals on bottom (none in the middle) /16 coals on top approx. 15 min. or until biscuit in center is no longer doughy. Remember to rotate the oven every 10 min. You can lift the foil and rolls out of the dutch oven and cover with foil and your cutting board. Flip over and remove foil off rolls.

Dutch Oven Beans (these are the best beans you will ever have!)

    1/2 lb of bacon
    1 lb hamburger
    1 onion (chopped)
4 cups of kidney beans (if raw soak over night-we just use canned beans approximately 3 cans)
    1 cup lima beans
    4 cans white beans
    1 cup brown sugar
    1/4 tsp soda
    1/3 cup Apple Cider Vinegar
1 tbsp liquid smoke (can add more depending on your "smokey" taste preference)
    1 cup ketchup

Fry bacon, and brown meat. Add all other ingredients. Bake for 1 1/2 hours or until you think is done. If you didn't soak the bean either, up cook time to approximately 4 hours. I usually mix all the ingredients in a tupperware container, minus bacon & beef prior to camping trip and gives time for beans to soak up some of the liquid smoke flavor. Enjoy!!!!!!

Lana, have I told you how much I love these recipes lately?

Funny thing is I haven't even been camping yet this summer! But lucky for me I'm "resourceful" and have just been improvising by making them at home lol

LOL - I make the beans at home and freeze them. I love them!

I picked up an awesome camping cookbook a few weeks ago and it has some amazing recipes, stuff you could do at home too and a lot of dutch oven ones. I'll post some in a bit.

Well these aren't really dishes, but sides. They're pretty good any how. First is grilled onions. You take a large sweet onion, such as Maui onions, peel it, slice from the top in a star partern but not all the way thru, place a chunk of butter on top, wrap in foil and place on the grill or side of coals. You just need to spin it every now and again. Takes bout 5 to 10 minutes depending on heat.

The other is cooked banana sundaes. Take an unpeeled banana and slice thru the peel on the curved side, careful not to slice thru the other side. Then open it a bit and place in pieces of chocolate, marshmallows and pieces of fruit and nuts. Jelly or jam will work for the fruit too. Then just wrap them in foil and place along side the coals keeping them upright and to turn them after bout 2 minutes. They are best when the coals are dying down and take 5 minutes or so. Remove from coals, unwrap and eat from the foil. They taste just as good as an icecream sundae when camping. Have fun.
Oh and I like foil as you don't have to clean it.
