This is the simplest recipe that I had, some are richer but this one is quick, almost foolproof and really good.
I use Ghirardelli cocoa. The darkness of your cocoa affects the darkness of the cake.

    3/4 cup of butter- soft
1-2/3 cups sugar less 3 Tablespoons
    3 eggs
    1 teaspoons vanilla
    2 cups flour
    2/3 cup cocoa
    1 teaspoon baking soda
    1 teaspoon salt
    1/4 teaspoon baking powder
    1 1/2 cup water

    Oven 350
Grease and flour two 9" round baking pans (I always use glass) or one 13" rectangular baking pan
Sift together flour, cocoa, salt, baking soda, baking powder.
In large mixing bowl, combine butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla; beat at high speed with electric mixer for 3 mins, scraping the bowl a couple times. Add dry mixture alternately with the water in at least 3 parts. Blend until just combined. Pour into baking pans.
Bake 30 to 35 mins until a toothpick comes out clean.
Cool 10 mins, then remove from pans to cool on wire racks.

I love this recipe! I tried it and decided to add my own flare with a small amount of creamy peanut butter swirled through the cake before baking. If you like peanut butter cups, your will love this.Thanks.
