Are you allergic to onions and all its "relatives"?
I'm thinking perhaps chives or leeks could replace the onion in your recipes, if you're not also allergic to those...
I have been hunting for a pasta sauce recipe, I have tried just omitting the onions in some recipes and they just don't taste quite right. I have a severe allergy to onions, and really miss pasta sauce.![]()

Most of the shadows of this life are caused by our standing in our own sunshine.

I just made pasta sauce, and could easily have omitted the onion. However, I have no recipe, just a method.
First, I saute the garlic in a pan until it's translucent.
Then, I peel and cut the tomatoes I'm going to use, and start layering them in a crock pot. Add some garlic, plus whatever spices you want (I use garlic salt, oregano, basil, red pepper, etc.) Put the seasonings between the layers, as well as on top of the final layer. Let cook on low for 6-8 hours. Stir and taste. Add more seasonings if desired. Cover and let sit another 4-6 hours. Continue this until you get a flavor you like (mine took just over a day). Then, to thicken the sauce scoop out some juice into a bowl. Whisk in cornstarch until you get a very pale red color, then mix back into the rest of the mixture. I also add tapioca to the mix, but I like to have a thick sauce.
I don't measure when I cook (sometimes when I bake, though), so I do everything by taste and feel. I really like using the slow cooker, though, because it doesn't have to be watched all that closely.
Thank you so very much... I am a slow cooker fan as well, I work stupid long hours and it makes my life much easier. I eyeball everything myself. Sounds great, thanks for the reply.
Onion Allergy
If you feel strange discomfort and breakout of rashes etc after consuming onions, you suffer from a rare onion allergy. This allergy is caused by exposure to or consumption of onions. Usually those who suffer from this allergy experience bloating, gas and digestive discomfort. However, generally but not always onion allergy is caused by raw onions.
For those who suffer from onion allergy, cooking the vegetables before consumption might help overcome this allergy in some cases. Usually those who are allergic to onions could also be allergic to garlic.
Onion Allergy Symptoms:
Since onion allergy is a contact allergy, most of the symptoms of contact dermatitis are apparent in this allergy. There are symptoms that occur on the skin, as well as discomfort in the digestive tract. Some of the common symptoms are:
Breaking out of skin in hives,
Itching all over the body,
Bloating,
Gas,
Nausea,
Diarrhea
Headaches and migraines
Though possible, it is rare for onion allergy to become fatal. Some people who have a severe allergy to onions may go into an anaphylactic shock and should therefore be extra careful while eating these.
Usually, those who claim to have an allergy to onions, are simply intolerant to onions. They may experience cramping and bloating in their abdomen which is because the body is unable to process and digest raw onions. This is usually manifested in the form of indigestion and therefore can be differentiated from an actual allergic reaction.
Onion Allergy Treatment
Mild symptoms like gas and bloating can be taken care of by taking an elimination diet. Such a diet helps in eliminating onion from the digestive tract. Usually, gas, cramps and bloating may disappear immediately after consumption of an elimination diet. This is usually an indication of onion intolerance rather than onion allergy.
For onion allergy, anti histamines and over the counter drugs might prove useful. Topical steroids are usually used to treat skin reactions and hives that may have broken out on the skin. If the allergy is severe, contact a doctor immediately.

Goodness I would hate to be allergic to Onions, Scallions, Chives , leeks and Garlic. ( all Onions in the Plant Family )
Food tastes so much better with a little Spice Of Life ..
It might be the Type of Onion you are using that makes the Sauce not seem to taste right.
One thing is to try ( small amounts ) of the ones above, As KMonte suggested .
This meaning to saute a small piece, or eat raw, then see if there is a reaction .
This will test your actual Allergic reaction, versus the intolerance .
Like the medical report says It is very Rare to be Allergic to the actual Onion Plant Family. But there are ways to tell and test, Just like a Allergy Specialist would.
The problem here is that if you eat anything that is processed or made by anyone other than yourself.
You don't know what their word " Spices " means.
Mc Donald's, KFC, Pizza take homes like Pizza time and most Store bought Pasta mixes ( Powdered or Canned ) Salad dressings, Tuna Helper , powdered gravy mixes do have an Onion or it's additive in it for flavoring.
So do a study, test the " Waters " in very small amounts.
An onion allergy is very rare, it is caused by the sulfur compounds within it just like in garlic or other strong tasting flavors like leeks and chives. Again, it is very rare and a specialist would have to say the allergy is there. A person with an onion allergy cannot consume them without going to the hospital or being very close to. General dislike of onions however is very very common. A person who has a taste aversion to the harsh strong taste of onions can cause that dislike as well as create the feeling of being sick without actually having an allergy, they can pick up on the onion flavor in a second because it is something they do not like. I am that way with eggs, the slightest wiff of them being cooked or smallest of tastes and I will come very close to vomiting...that is an aversion to the taste not an allergy. Only thing you can do in a taste aversion case is to avoid it altogether.
There are those who believe that dictionaries should not merely reflect the times but also protect English from the mindless assaults of the trendy.
Sometimes I prefer not to add onions to my pasta too. What you can do is, you can consume pasta with white sauce with herb seasoning like basil, pepper, parsley, etc as per your taste.
