People will use almost anything as a lubricant when having sex......Crisco, butter, hand lotion, K-Y, water, spit/saliva, shampoo, soap, mineral oil, whipped cream, jam/jellies, toothpaste, shaving cream, mouthwash, semen.......you name it! Never a good thing when you put something down there as the same thing your car runs on! YIKES! If it feels slippery, people will use it as a lubricant. I urge you to always read the label! Important things to look for is if it contains any of the 3 BIG No, No's! If it contains Sugar, if it is oil (petroleum) based & if it contains Glycerin if you are prone to yeast infections. Never a good idea to use any product that contains sugar! Ladies this will turn your Sugar Dish into a bowl of Cottage Cheese! Sugar causes YEAST INFECTIONS! So if you are prone to infections such as avoid the chocolate syrup & whipped cream on your next adventure! Lubrication such as K-Y is water based, but it contains GLYCERIN & cause an increase in the growth of yeast in the vaginal area which can eventually lead to a yeast infection. We all know water and oil doesn't mix. So when you are in the bathroom cleaning up after the great love making session and you think you are all clean and fresh, THINK AGAIN! The oil in some lubricants doesn't wash completely off trapping bacteria, sending you straight to the doctors office with the thought that he has cheated on you when in fact that ITCH is just a bacteria infection! And may I add NOW AN EXPENSIVE ONE WITH THE BILL YOU JUST RECEIVED! Other important reasons to use a lubrication is if you are having painful intercourse, experiencing vaginal dryness due to stress, medications, or other common medical issues, OR maybe your partner is not so hot in the foreplay department & you aren't yet excited when he enters the love tunnel, it can lead to small tears in the vaginal canal, again trapping bacteria. Also not using a lubrication during intercourse with a condom can raise the chance of breaking the condom, and before you know it you are now up at 3AM feeding your new baby! At all cost use a lubrication! I can not explain how important this is! |

Helpful in places, but somewhat incomplete - you say don't use X, Y or Z but then you say lube can be really important but you don't actually give any recommendations for a good lube.
I understand products like Astroglide and the various Eros lubes are great, and vag-friendly - but they are not alone on the market and I don't know what the glycerine content of either is. I have also read that a cheap and safe alternative for those who are NOT using condoms is grape seed oil.

Don't rush out for a lube that contains glycerin such as Astroglide if you are prone to yeast infections as stated above it is known to cause yeast to grow in the vaginal area and can lead to yeast infections. Also I probably wouldn't grape seed oil either as it is probably not going to wash off entirely (oil & water doesn't mix) Trapping bacteria. Plant based oils and latex condoms don't mix at all, so just be careful. I say find what is safe and works for you and stick with it! Every women is different. However when choosing a lubrication be knowledgeable. You don't want to buy a silicone based lubrication if you plan to use it with a bedroom toy that contains silicone because it will cause your toy to melt. However silicone lube is great for water play, anal play, and just to keep handy in the shower for doing self breast exams. Using a silicone lube for self breast exams in the shower is great because it wont just rinse off with water and gives a nice gliding effect for an effective exam. Water based lubes that are PH balanced usually work best for women. Especially if you are prone to infection such as yeast or bacteria. PH balanced water based lubricants are great for women who have issues of vaginal dryness because it will soak into the vaginal tissue keeping it moisturized and healthy while protecting the area from tears and such as lotion does to dry skin. |

On the point of the potential risks of oil based lube - While it is true that oil and water don't mix it doesn't mean you can't wash oil off. Have you ever spilled olive oil, nut oil or grape seed oil on your hands while cooking? Have you ever given someone a massage with a grape seed oil based essentials oils mix? If you have you'll know that even the mildest soap and plenty of warm water washes those kinds of oils off just fine. Of course, the cooch is harder to wash than the hands and you don't want to use too much soap down there, but the same principle applies. Another wonderful thing about our vaginas is they are actual quite efficient at self cleaning - far more so than our 'external' skin. We all of us renew the outer layers of our vaginal wall regularly, shedding the surface layer and it is then expelled in our regular secretions. Any oil residue left behind from using something like grape seed oil as a personal lubricant would not stay in the vagina for very long at all. I am 100% with you on other, heavier oils being a no-no though. I'm really only talking about something light and natural like grape seed oil. I agree about people finding what suits their needs, both in terms of health and usage. I have never noticed a ban against listing products as long as no link is provided, so here's a list of Glycerin free, water based lubes for anyone who is interested: Slippery Stuff, Liquid Silk, Maximus, Sliquid brand lubricants, Hathor Aphrodesia. There is a potential drawback with all of those bar Sliquid in that they contain parabens. Some people can apparently react badly to parabens and there is at least one study linking ingestion of parabens through the skin with possible cancer causing effects. Though it is only fair to say parabens have been in use in cosmetics for a very long time and are generally considered safe by the industry. Thanks for all you information, Stacie - it's great to have all this stuff up here.

![]() Your almost hi-jacking the thread ![]() Thank you Stacie that would have taken alot of time to write all of that and obviously, you love your profession. We as Moderators and I know, Little our Administrator, are always very pleased to have someone give their "opinions" on things that may help the Women that come to this Forum. You are correct, advertising your products may have looked like you were trying to promote yourself without the links, "we would still be watching you", Thanks again, people have their own opinions as well on topics and can perhaps "add" to your knowledge. Don't stop writing... CW

That's what I love about this place, CW - reading Stacie's info sparked and interest and I went and did some research. It seemed only right to come back and share that.

So are there any lubes left to use? Or are all of them going to provide the 'means' for a yeast infection to grow?...even though the candida fungus is always going to be sitting in a woman's body whether they like it or not.

We rarely use a lube. Only when he is having little trouble with irritated penis skin. That seems to come from spending too much time with "Rosey Palms". There are very few I can use due to paraben sensitivity but I found some by visiting the local adult shop and got little old man working there to grab his reading glasses and help check the lables. Actually they had a display of paraben free products, we were just looking for additional choices.
