The coffee and a card sounds a nice start. How about a cd you mixed placed for him to find later? It may be early for doing big things but you could tell him you are taking him out to dinner and a have some freinds and a cake show up.

What are his hobbies and interests? Maybe a video game you heard him talking about if he likes those... if he plays guitar maybe a book of music sheets of one of his favorite bands... something inexpensive --- but thoughtful of what he enjoys.
I want to thank you all I I had dinner with him last night for his birthday since he has plans with his family member and YES i did go to the guitar center and bought a music sheet book wich he thought was the best thing and he asked me how I knew to get him that.:") when thats exactly what i needed. ......I just smiled.........with silence.....
the night was solid without any mishaps and we had a blast.
    ..........thanks everyone.
