    Default Sex Education

We've had some discussion about this before. I intend this to be a fairly serious, as factual as possible thread.

I got an overview of a sex education presentation the other night, that was fantastic. It was humorous, it was not about relationships or morality or even reproduction really. It was about bodies and how they work sexually. The presenter explains what arouses both genders based on physiology. He talked about "growers" and "showers", about how to touch a woman's breasts to arouse her. He explains the similarities in male and female sexual organs, including erectile tissue, ejaculation and orgasm in both.

It was an overview of the 90 min presentation he does but I learned a few things in it. I'm no expert but I probably pay more attention to this subject in terms of reading and discussion than the average person. The therapists, educators and sexologists there agreed that this type of education would make a huge difference in people's lives.

One of our Tantric educators recommended the movie, Let's Talk About Sex by James Houston.

Here are some facts from the USA:

Every day in America, 10,000 teens catch a sexually transmitted disease,
    2,400 teen girls get pregnant,
55 young people are infected with HIV.

By ages 18-19, 62% of American teenagers have had sex. 70% have had some sexual contact (anal, oral, or vaginal).
Of the 18.9 million new STD cases in the U.S. each year, nearly 50% occur among 15-24 year olds.
30% of teenage girls in the U.S become pregnant before the age of 20. More than 80% of those pregnancies are unintended.
In the U.S. the teen pregnancy rate is over four times that of the Netherlands, over three times that of Germany, and almost three times that of France.
Teen pregnancies cost U.S. taxpayers 9 Billion dollars a year.
Teen STD's cost taxpayers 6.5 billion dollars a year.

If the U.S. were able to achieve the sexual health outcomes on a par with the Netherlands, American teens each year would experience 600,000 fewer pregnancies, 350,000 fewer births and 63,000 fewer abortions. The annual savings for American taxpayers would reach $505 million.

[source: James Houston article in Huffington Post 3/3/11]

When we add to this the estimates that as many as 15% of American women are Anorgasmic (unable to orgasm). Additionally, of those women who are orgasmic it is estimated they do so only 50-70% of the time.
[Frank JE, Mistretta P, Will J. Diagnosis and treatment of female sexual dysfunction. American Family Physician. (2008);77:635. PMID: 18350761]

Obviously we have some problems and what we have been learning and doing isn't adequate.

This isn't intended so much to be a discussion thread but more informational. If you are going to post information here as fact, I expect reputable sources, not you think or someone at the gym told you or "everybody" knows.

Please do not copy and paste large volumes of material from other sites as there may copyright considerations.

If you are sharing personal techniques or experiences, take credit and let us know that is what it is.

A good thread topic. When I was reading about teenage pregnancy, I wondered if the European countries cited have TV shows that glorify teen pregnancy. I also wondered if teen pregnancies are spread almost evenly across ethnic lines or if some groupings glorify it and others abhor it. Same goes for economic groupings.

The World Health Organization site probably has figures on that - if anyone does.

    Default Condom Talk

They come in all sizes and various shapes, colors and textures. Unless you are in a truly committed, monogamous relationship, you should be using them.

I went to a women's class this past weekend and learned how to put one on using my mouth, apparently this is a little trick some pros use to ensure one is used.

    A few hints we got?

Spermicide cause a reaction for many women - avoid it.

If you use a condom for oral and want to switch to penetrative sex, put on a fresh condom. The one used for oral could have tiny tears or weak spots.

There are condoms designed for anal sex, they are a little tougher.

Read the manufacturers restrictions regarding lubricants. Condoms are made of different materials and each interacts badly with something. DO NOT use things like hand lotion, baby oil or Vaseline with condoms.

A drop of lube (not a big glob) on the penis before you slip on the condom may help him feel more responsive with it.

Condoms have an expiration date, check it.

Condoms should not be stored where they will be exposed to temperature extremes or creased or put under pressure, like a glove box, your pocket, a wallet, loose in a purse, in with things like your sharp, greasy, bike tools. They will be far more likely to tear or leak.

Here are a couple excellent videos by a sex educator about condoms:

Interesting about using a drop of lube before putting the condom on... I would have thought that would make it easier to slip off?

Just a drop on the head of the penis only, not down the shaft.
