i'm a newbie, so forgive me if this question has been asked before...
anyway, i'm 22 years old and i'm about to graduate from college and i feel that it's finally time to get my nose fixed.
let's see, i've broken it twice, so it's definitely not a pretty site, haha!
i'm just curious about the surgery and who here has had it...
like what did you feel like going into the surgery?
how invasive it was...
what you felt like when you came out of surgery...
and how long it took you to get back into the swing of things...
oh and how you feel about it now...
i'm looking to start the process with insurance and referrals soon.
basically anything you're willing to share would be cool, i've been wanting this for so long...i would really like to breathe through my nose normally! oh and the aesthetic too...

cant really give any advice, but a question how did you break your nose - twice??

oh man, the first time i broke it i was six...i got kicked in the face!
and the second time was a few years later playing softball we were doing a throw around before a game and someone threw the ball to me and i didn't have enough time to react...two more black eyes!

Hi, I had rhinoplasty years ago - in order to breathe better - not for cosmetic reasons. Things have probably changed a lot since then so I do not know how helpful this will be. I expected to really be able BREATHE. Great gilps of air ... That did not happen. I got some small amount of help from it but I would not go through the surgery again for the tiny bit of improvement I got. I'd double check with my DR. to make sure you know what to expect in this regard. My nose looks fine (though it looked okay before) - he just opened up the nostrils a bit and broke some bones way up in my nose. I felt all that, by the way. I thought I'd be completely asleep but was in a sort of twighlight sleep and was not supposed to remember anything. I remember each of the three big whacks he game the inside of my nose. Again - check with your DR. to clarify this... It is always to get a good idea what to expect beforehand. I learned that lesson the hard way. Good luck with your surgery. I am sure yours will go much better than mine. Again, mine was 25 years ago so things have changed a lot since then. Just really wanted to caution you to check with your Dr. to make sure you understand all.

oh dear, you must have caused your poor old mum a lot of worry, i hope everything goes well with your new nose, but be careful or ask for an extra strong one!!

oh yeah...my mom constantly worries, i'm just a clumsy person by nature...she always jokes and tells me i need body amour or bubble wrap!

i can so identify, i am also clumsy, trip over, spill things, drop things etc, never broken any bones (well yet) collected a lot of bruises over the years!!! tell your mum she's over reacting - you just need a helmet with a full face guard LOL!!!

I've had 2 surgeries. The first was reconstructive, my nose had been broken several times and one of my nasal passages had all but closed up. At my consultation the doctor asked me what I wanted it to look like. (my father is Scilian and I had the classic Scilian nose....you know like Danny Thomas had.) I told him that I didn't care so long as I could breathe. He started explaining what he could do..

"Well we can take this bump out and we can add a bone graft in the tip to bring it up a little. The danger with the bone graft is that sometimes they will slip or turn and we'd need to go back in and fix that."

So I agreed to all he wanted to do. And sure enough the bone graft slipped and i had issues....numb upper lip, pullng sensation and a lisp. The numbness was because when the bone graft slipped it ended up rubbing against a nerve, which is also what caused the lisp. So I had to have a second surgery to fix the issue. Again it was an open cut procedure because that was the only way to fix it.

Since my surgery was reconstructive and my collapsing nasal passage had to be rebuilt there was no option to do the close procedure.

I was referred to my surgeon by a friend and before I even made a consultation appointment I did the research and made the calls to verify that he is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon.. This does make a difference. Many doctors are now performing plastic surgery procedures but that doesn't mean that they qualified to perform plastic surgery.

If I had not have needed the surgery I never would have gotten it done. It was PAINFUL! And I have a high pain tolerance, heck I skate roller derby, but this surgery, by far, the most pain I have ever felt. (Even walking on a broken ankle for 2 days wasn't nearly as painful.)
