You have to quit focusing on the negatives - that can be hard to do, we are bombarded with so much. I was actually ordered by a doctor to go on a news fast at one time in my life because I getting so stressed. Start looking for the positives and there are more than you think. Yes there are lay offs and a financial mess but if you look at what some of the new, small companies are developing you will be amazed. This is a transistion time and people resist change even if it for the good. Some of us have been saying for years that the changes had to come, as a society (pretty much world wide) we've not been proactive and now the changes will come because there is no longer a choice. Much of it is good! It's just going to take some time.
Look for sources of positive info. I read a number of publications including Forbes , Fortune and Mother Earth News and find heartening information in them all the time - a lot of it is your perspective! I've just subscribed to ODE magazine which is targeted to intelligent optimists. You might want to check it out.
I was a vegetarian for a number of years - the story why I'm not now is too long for the moment but remember that there are different qualities to this. Some animals are raised naturally, given free range and not pumped full of hormones and junk, others aren't. We all have a place in the food chain, (I believe plants have awareness too) and there is no wrong in responsibly and respectfully consuming food plants and animals. What is wrong is misuse and waste.
Your hyper emotionalism is probably part of your response to some of the difficulties you have faced in life. My guess would be that as you mature and gain more life experience this should take the form of greater compassion and understanding and you should become less reactive. You might find some of the material available now on HSPs (highly sensitive people) helpful. It was very much so for me. We are all works in progress -you can become your own masterpiece!
