It's a very low impact exercise, which makes it good because it is easy on your body and especially your joints. It's one of the only exercises that works your entire body as well.
It burns a lot of calories because you're using your entire body and the water adds resistance so there is a bit of strength building as well.
I used a calculator to get this.
1 hour of moderate swimming for someone 115 lbs burns about 360 calories.
1 hour of moderate running for someone 115 lbs burns about 470 calories.
So running burns more calories but it's not a full body workout and it's high-impact.
