colon cancer

hi everyone my friends mom was just diagnosed with colon cancer about 2 months ago. she told me that it is stage 4. i know that stage 4 is bad but my friend also told me that it skipped stages 2 and 3. apparently the cancer went straight from her colon to her liver with out getting into any of her other organs. her liver is still functioning at 100% and ive been told that you can remove up to 2/3 of your liver and it will grow back? anyways she is being treated heavily and she definitely is a fighter. shes even going to the cancer treatment center of america in chicago for some new trial stuff. i was just wondering if anyone knew anything about this and knew what her chances are for making a full recovery?

Colon cleasning is bunk.

Ending up with metastasis in the liver when you have colon cancer can be part of the disease. Yes, you can live with only part of your liver. I doubt the cancer skipped stage 2 and 3. More than likely the disease just wasn't diagnosed until stage 4. That's really tough news. There is a lot of info on the net about support groups and information.

Clinical trials are an area of hope. Understand however, it may not be 'the cure'. Docs use trials to find ways to better treat patients that regular standard procedures don't help. I work at a cancer center doing research for a surgeon. The center that is running the trial that your mom is interested in participating in, can give you a lot of information. Ask questions. Lots of questions. Every patient that I meet, I thank for being a participant on one of our trials. Medicine wouldn't be able to advance without folks who had the courage and strength to participate.

That's terrible news,
My husband was diagnosed with Colon cancer stage 3 , 2 1/2 years ago and it was devastating news for us. but since surgery and only doing a few Chemo treatments and Radiation only a few of those also, due to very bad side effects.
He has been Cancer free for 2 years. Good luck to you friends Mom

We're in the same boat here! My 51 year old sister went in to the hospital for a Routine appendictomy in May - we were informed 2 weeks later that they found cancer in her appendix. The appendix is attached to the upper colon and so therefore its considered a form of colon cancer. We've been told that its in ther peratineal cavity (lining of the abdomen) but on Tuesday we were told that its in her liver and that they can't do anything for her. Shes 51 years old and they are telling her that they can't do anything for her!

I'm lookin to find any option that may be out there, we're not ready to give up! Any info would be greatly appreciated.

As said before the cancer probably was not diagnosed until stage 4. As far as I know there are only 3 ways to treat cancer. Surgery, Chemotherapy and radiation. There is a test taking place were Doc's use electricity to burn the excess cells but that's only in forms of skin cancer. Medicine would not be what it is today with out clinical trails. Well I saw this and wanted to post something. Cancer actually can skip stages. Cancer kind of makes up its own rules. Many people think it is a process but really it isn't. Example.... My Mom was diagnosed with Non small cell Adenocarcinoma Lung Cancer January 8 2008. they removed the tumar because she was stage 1. Feb 28 2008 she experienced a dizzy spell. MRI showed 2 lessions on her brain (Metastases). now going by staging, it should have first effected her lymph nodes, possibly both lungs. Yet my mom had a 3in mass in her right upper lung and 2 masses in her brain and thats it. That is a jump from stage 1 to stage 4. Even doctors can't predict what can happen. If a doctor tells you there's nothing that can be done then find another doctor. Doctors are not God and theres people every day that go into remission when doctors say its not possible. ironically a guy just walking by my desk is the perfect example. He was diagnosed and told he had 3-6 months at most. he is not only cancer free now but had been for 2 yrs. Cancer is not easy to beat but if you stay hopeful and give it the fight of your life, you will find more success

Oh goodness. :'( This breaks my heart. My stepmom just passed away Sept 16th this year from cancer that started in the colon 4 years ago. I honestly believe if she would've left my controlling and demeaning father she would've made it. She went through every operation/treatment she could think of, heard of, could afford. My only advice is give your mother as much love and help as you possibly can. Make her happy. Cause I think it was the trying to fight against someone else for her life is what took my stepmom down. Never give up. Never give in. And enjoy every second of life. PLEASE! This is coming from someone who seemed to realize far too late just how important her stepmom was/is in her life.
