    Default finding your own style

    hi ladies,

i'm a young woman in my mid-twenties and i feel like i still havent developed "my own style." i dont like to be super trendy (i think it can be a bit superficial and not very individualistic...everyone looking the same!) but i do love clothes and accessories and shoes, etc.

i want to develop my own unique style. any suggestions for how to do this? i have tried flipping through fashion magazines but most show fashions that are not easily adaptable to everyday life (too expensive, too trendy).

    thanks!

OMG, your typing so fast I can't keep up with your threads, lol.

    Okay, I am the same.

I really don't like looking like anyone but me.... I can't stand the thought of walking into a place and we're wearing Target tops together, if you get my drift.

I have a keen eye for fashion maybe due to modelling days, don't know, but I love Goodwill Stores firstly, as horrid as that sounds, I can walk into 3 or 4 and match things put them on (often some rich lady ditches something after wearing it once or not liking it) and walk out, getting compliments, if only they knew the whole outfit cost $30....

I also love Ezy Buy, their European section and I often buy from their magazine.....

Being Unique and "owning your personality" in style is a good thing....

    wow CW modeling?! oooOOOo-LA-LA-LA!

Personally... I LOVE going to thrift shops and seeing what other people have thrown away. I of course donate to them as well ..lol.

I think you have to be comfortable in whatever you wear. I think that developing your "style" can be a reflection of the things you like. It is important that you know what your body can and can't handle. I mean that if you are 5'0 and wear knee high boots and knee length skirt..its not going to fit your body type.... if you know what I mean. Personally I like to be comfortable... jeans sandals and a cute polo would work for me. I think it also depends on maintenance. Do you like dressing up everyday or just every other day?

Your "unique" style will come from within. Just listen to yourself and you'd be surprised what you'll come up with.

Also, you might want to watch "what not to wear" its not so much the trends that the show teaches you its how you tailor clothes to your body without actually cutting them up and sewing them.

    Good luck!

thanks everyone! yellowpixi3: I adore what not to wear!! you are right, it's so helpful in pointing out clothes that fit a certain body type or style or event.

i also love thrift shops. i think i have "lost" my way with style a bit because I have moved to an area that does not have a lot of these shops. Actually, the only real clothes shopping around is the generic brand name stuff. no wonder everyone in my town looks the same!

good news though, i am moving back so I'm going to revisit my old favorite shops

i guess another thing i forgot about was online shopping. can be a bit risky (i have had some unpleasant surprises off ebay) but sometimes you get an amazing piece!

jclyden: you are right, i should just wear what i like and what makes me comfortable.

whatever you wear IS your own style!! you dont have to fit into a certain mold, just wear wahtever you like adn looks good on you and that will become your style. and you never know who might be copying it because they think it looks good!!

You don't have to spend a lot to be fashionable. If you really have a fashion sense, you can look great in a piece from goodwill. If you have poor taste, you may pick the most expensive piece in macy's but look lousy. Style is an expression of oneself. Some are very corporate, othere casual. Depends on where and when you wear it, for as long as your look very neat, like smelling good look, make-up to enhance your beauty and walk with confidence, then you will exude sex appeal...

I'm ready for an overhaul........ I could so donate all my clothes. so bored of my wardobe. I always use to be so caught up in fashion and now i've just lost my flair.

Pick colors that complement your skin tone and cuts and styles that are for your body type.

    Smile hi

Im not a good in advising when it comes with fashion, but one thing is for sure, you can find what really good on you, when it really represent yourself and personality, fashion that you are comfortable with.Good Luck.

Interesting, I thought about this too. I too am trying to create my own unique style. Studying and understanding different fashions is a good idea. I'm not into trendy clothes either.....Why go to trendy Urban Outfitters when you can just go to Goodwill and find cooler stuff.
My own style is definitely influenced by 90s grunge. I feel girls 10 years ago dressed much nicer. A very conservative friend of mine asked what my style is and I told her I'm a punk rock girl which is whatever I wear is MY own style. Just like someone said...but I like studying about fashion history. It's good to know about the materials you work with. I really like to buy my own sewing machine and just make my own dresses. I feel I have way better ideas than most people when it comes to that.
