Unhappy Need hair advice (long frizzy disaster) (with pics)

    Hi girls,

I am looking for honest advice for how to deal with my hair. My hair has always been a messy nest and I want to change the way I deal with it. My hair, as of this morning:

My morning ritual is presently limited to shampooing, conditioning, drying, and brushing. It is clear from the images that I attempt to impose no particular style in terms of cutting, perming, treating, or using product - but I am willing to do so. I HATE the frizz most of all. In the sunlight, it looks like I have a hair halo.

I have no experience dealing with hair properly and most other women I know either have short hair or "hair of a different era" (later than the era of the cavewoman, but I digress). A friend suggested I try for long wavy curls (perhaps permed) with some product. Another friend suggested something called a digital perm.

    Any advice is greatly appreciated,

    May

Your hair needs moisture! Can you skip shampooing for a day? Just condition and rinse? Try that first and foremost. Curly and wavy hair require more moisture than straight hair. Maybe try a deep-conditioning product ... you can get them anywhere, even Walmart. Just give it some TLC.
After that, you might try mousse for styling. You should get your hair cut by a real stylist with an opinion about what to do with your hair (not anybody who is scared to tell you what they think! Pick a stylist with an opinion who is willing to work with you!) They should know what kinds of layers to put in your hair to make it look its best.
Good luck! I bet once it gets moisturized, you're going to have some seriously gorgeous hair.

Hey! I have really long hair as well.....I found that a good ceramic hair straightner (I have a one made by Chi, worth the money...never looked back) makes a HUGE difference in terms of smoothness and shine.

If you're not really into the straight hair look, it looks like your hair has a natural curl/wave to it, so while it is still wet...brush it out, run some "curl control" mousse through it and scrunch it with your fingers. Great look...especially in the summer!

    Good luck!!!

When my hair is long a it is naturally curly like yours. I wet it and then brush it gently... then flip my head upside down while wet and scrunch mousse in my hair all over. let it dry naturally. If you blow dry it, it will go frizzy. Good luck!

First and foremost I think your hair needs to be trimmed. Once you do that definitely moisturize your hair starting with you shampoo and conditioner. Next, if you want to wear your hair curly you might try a leave in conditioner plus mouse or some kind of curl activator and leave the blow dryer out or if you must use it, use a diffuser. If you want to wear your hair straight, then use a leave in conditioner, a serum and let your hair air dry and try only using a good quality flat iron.

Wow, if i could send you a picture of my hair I would. It looks just like yours. well used to that is. I used to have very long, dark wavey hair that I honestly never took out of a bun because it was just so frizzy and thick. you can look on my pic on here and see my hair back as always and normaly some sort of gel kept the baby hair from flying around my face. First I found washing your hair everyday does more damage. with thick heavy hair, you should really do it every other day. My hair dresser told me that. you dont want to wash away all the natural oils everyday. Of course at first it'll feel oily but you'll scalp will adjust over a week or 2 so that on day 2 your hair will look so healthy. when I was my hair its a frizzy mess but on day 2 its calm and looks great. Now second thing is I'd cut it. I had my hair down to my butt and now I never let it go back my bra strap. any thing longer becomes a total pain. Cutting it will work wonders. Shampoo wise, I cant afford saloon stuff so I us sunsilk (the blue bottle for antipoof) and pantene smooth. when you run out of a brand, switch to an new one, then back. You should never use the same shampoo for months and yrs. Your scalp will thank you for the change (again my hair dresser told me this and i myself see the change). Blow drying i found makes it worse for me unless i blow dry while brushing it down. Although I'm now told to not brush your hair while it's wet because it cause more split ends. Last but not least, invest in a straightening iron. I never used them, always thought they were a pain but mine has turned my dull dark wavey thick fizzy hair into something that everyone compliments. I've never been used to that. even now with my hair up to my shoulders, if I dont stick to everythin i just typed, I'd have some while lookin hair. you'd be suprised how thin it feels when you straighten it.

I think if you got a fresh haircut would help give your hair a healthy look, with a lot more volume, along with that you would get nicer curls/waves without it looking flat at the top of ur head and then poofing down( i dont know if you do but i have naturally curly hair and when i had it long it tended to look that way)

but if that scares u to cut it, definetly trim it on the ends! speaking from experience dont wash your hair with shampoo everyday! it kills those curls and waves! trust me!! shampoo it and condition it day 1, day 2, just condition it, day three u might be able to still just condition it ....or day 3 shampoo and condition it again.... you'll see an improvement.

I used to never believe in expensive product, until my best friend started doing a hair for a living...and it truely makes a big difference. get a nice shampoo and conditioner from a salon, its worth the money. Or as someone had mentioned get a nice straightener if u like ur hair that way and have the time to do it! ....

ohhh, and another thing, try not to blow dry it every day cuz that will most def.. kill ur hair and make it frizzy!

if u musst blow dry u should put in a good leave in conditioner and on top of that a good product for heat treated hair! ...protecting it will make it less damaging thus less frizzy!

I have a slight tendency toward course and frizzy hair thanks to my spanish descent. I also was made to have very long hair my entire childhood, so knew nothing about hair styling. I have to use a good conditioner, the best and cheapest I have found is Bioinfusion from Walgreens. Makes your hair slick and smooth. I would get a cut and get some layers, it will get style in your hair without even fixing it. I also love my Conair hair designer for straightening. Any straightener or anything you buy, make sure it says something about ionic on it, those will smooth your hair instead of making it frizzier. There are tons of smoothing hair products out there that are good, but my favorite is After Party by Bed Head.

I agree with what some of the others have said, getting a trim can make hair look more healthy and be a lot more manageable. I am a big fan of Redken products. You could try putting a hair serum in to add shine. Try checking out Redkens's Fresh Curl line, they make a whole bunch of products for curly hair. I really like Redken's "Anti-Frizz Shiner powerful all-day humidity seal for curly hair" hehe Good Luck
