    Hiya,
Soon i am going into adult nursing at uni, i was just wondering how people have gotten on doing this course. I know how hard it is and the work etc. I just wanted to know how other people have found it.

Its something i have always wanted to do, because i love the elderly and i just love caring for people in general. I sometimes looked after my uncle when he had cancer, and he always said how good id be as a nurse. However i have never had much confidence, and im not very good at my maths if im honest, was just worrying about that part. As i am going to be a student nurse to begin with i was just wondering what sorts of things ill be doing. I am also worried about the fact that i am the youngest one in my class there all alot older than me.. and its kind of making me feel that they are going to know alot more than me and be alot better. I really want to do well at this, and dont want anything to go wrong for me.

Please just give me a few ideas of what it will be like if you know it would help me alot.

    Thankyou x

I believe OG is a psychiatric nurse. He could shed some light.

I'm in the same boat as you. I actually am going into Oncology Nursing. Last yr I was a full time care giver for my Mom with Cancer. Hardest thing I ever had to do but my Mom always told me she thought I should not only be a nurse but to study oncology because of how much I studied the facts when she was sick. she always said she wants me to be what her nurses were to her. I myself am horrible with math but most people I know that have gone through nursing, they never had an issue with that part. The biggest thing is the terms you have learn. We shall venture into this together.

Are you in the UK or in the U.S.?

It's simple really....you can do everything you set your mind to.

Studying is just going to require time and effort. A&P is sheer memorization and chemistry you'll have to be able to wrap your head around abstract ideas and concepts. The math isn't too bad.

If you set yourself up for failure, you'll probably fail.

Go into it with a positive outlook. You'll be surprised what a difference your mind set will make.

That's awesome. I couldn't do anything in the medical field. I get too sad and want to fix everyone. I go to an Oncologist office every month, it's humbling, but it pulls at my heart strings. I was there just this morning, it always affects me for a few days.

I am not a nurse, but a nursing assistant. I was in nursing school a few years back but went through my divorce and had a hard time concentrating and quit. I work in a nursing home, as I have for 8 yrs now and work with the sick and elderly. I have taken care of the mentally handicapped as well. I love it, I love helping people and I love love LOVE taking care of the elderly. They make my day

I am an oncology nurse. Have been for 16 years. When I first started nursing school, I was scared to death. I was 33 years old and walking into something I knew nothing at all about. I jumped right in with both feet, excited to finally get an education. Nursing school is extremely demanding. You have classes and clinicals. You must be truly devoted to becoming a nurse to get through all the hours of regular classes and clinical. I think the last 2 years of school, I learned to function on 3-4 hours sleep a night, lol. Was it worth it, ABSOLUTLEY! I love nursing, especially Oncology. I started out wanting to be a surgical nurse. That had always been my dream. But, as you will learn, your specialty chooses you, you do not choose it. Over the past 16 years working with many nurses, I have come to realize that not everyone should be an oncology nurse. I decided to change my specialty the last semester of nursing school when my classes took me to the Cancer Unit of a university hospital which caters to the indigent population. I worked the floor for 3 years, and learned everything I could. On the floor you are taking care of the terminal patients. I started to experience burnout and went to the outpatient area. There I mixed and gave chemotherapy which I loved and always will. Then I become a transplant nurse. Then with the economy as it is, the Transplant program closed and I with 8 other nurses were laid off. I had worked at that same hospital for 15 years. I am now working with a research group. We are making a vaccine for Breast Cancer. I am the apheresis nurse for the program. This is very rewarding.

The reason I am explaining all this, is to show you that if you are a nurse, the possibilities are endless. I would recommend if you are young, that you enter a nursing program that offers BSN as well as MSN. This opens more doors for you for management and teaching. Good luck to you.
