Eat slowly. When you eat slow, you allow your body to recognize that you are full before eating too much.
Cut out easy stuff. Pop, sugar, salt.
Every little bit counts.
we all have little tips and tid bits that we swear by, that maybe someone else could use... Share them here.
I'll start.
For me it's soup and eating in my car at lunch. Everyday at work there is cookies and other horrid foods at work. So everyday I bring my lunch(usually a can of soup) and I go outside and sit in my car to eat. I end up not picking at the junk and I feel better about what I've eaten.

Drink lo cal hot choc if you're craving chocolate. Even the smell alone satisfies my choc cravings! I have one at the moment, it has a hint of mint in it! Mmm deee-lish!
Also plenty of fruit and veg.
In a restaurant, ask for a kid's portion, and instead of fries ask for a salad with dressing on the side. Drink lot's of water. Especially lukewarm with lemon first thing, it helps to cleanse the bowel, but beware because your farts will stink the first day!! lol!
Plenty of fibre as well.
Eat a good full breakfast and a hearty lunch. For the evening meal make it light, small quantity, and something that is easy to digest. Many of the monks, lamas, and yogis I know rarely eat after 2 or 4 pm and if so a very tiny amount. This way the body is not forced to try to digest food at a time when the metabolism is the slowest, thus the food is not converted to fat as readily. I do this every day and weight-wise even though I'm 114 pounds and 5"4' I'd still like to lose 2-3 pounds more. (occasionally I have to work through lunch so I have to eat something later in the day)

do not dream of the future,
concentrate the mind on the present moment.

I should note that this is probably more achievable if one is single, in a relationship where the partner feels the same, and/or doesn't have children.

I go for full breakfast, no mid-morning snack, then I burn all I eat in the afternoon.
About 7 years ago I gained about 2 stone after learning to drive. It crept on me over a period of 6 months. I went up 2 dress sizes, 10 to 14 (UK size). I was clearly lacking exercise.
I found that a low-carb diet worked for me. I lost the weight within 6 weeks. I cut out bread, potatoes, rice and cereals.
For breakfast I would have fruit with yoghurt or scrambled eggs and grilled bacon. Most lunches I enjoyed salads with variety of meats or fish, (watch out for certain salad dressings as can be very high in fat). Dinner time I enjoyed lean steak or salmon with lots of vegetables. I cut down on snacks and alcohol too.
When I lost the weight I joined the gym and did regular exercise. I re-introduced carbs into my diet and have not gained any weight since.
I do what Miya does. Plus, my measure is my fist. I only eat what fits in my fist.

Also, don't drink for about 30 minutes or so after meals. Your tummy needs to digest the food well. It produces the enzymes that would make digestion to it's optimum level. Diluting it with water when you drink will only hinder your tummy in doing its function well.
