What do you think abour ring size?

Just wanted to get everyone's take here.

What are your thoughts on engagement rings?

You want a big stone, a quality stone, or both?!

What's a reasonable amount to spend?

Or does it even matter at all?

Wow, this is a real personality issue. My first marriage I had solitare that wasn't really large, .33 of a carot but I work with my hands a lot, knocked the stone out (in my sewing room of all places), had to have a more substanual setting and it was kind of a hassle.

I'd always say quality over size (but then I worked for a jeweler at one time) the beauty of a good quality stone really shows taste. But some people are going for flash - they want something that will catch people's eye. Men and women. Some men really want their lady to have the so called "rock" as a sign of their affluence, I guess. Or to ward off competition?

The expense is another judgement call, working in financial services I saw couples who years later were still paying off the wedding, including rings. It just seems silly to start of with a load of debt that could undermine the marriage. In many case what they spent on all that would have made a good down payment on a house.

I assume you know all of this and are looking for a more emotional side of it?

I've never really cared about size as much as setting and style. But that's a whole other ball park, haha. As long as it's pretty and I can SEE it, then I'd like it.

A huge part of me wants to say it wouldn't matter... but I think about getting a pear shaped solitaire in yellow gold and shudder haha. But to answer your question, I agree that it's a personality thing. And I'd go more for quality than size.

Quality! just something about the fact that DH really considered the ring he bought me, wanted it to be special. That to me is better than some big flashy piece of junk. My diamond is about .33 carats (sp?) and I LOVE it. Bigger would be too flashy for me. DH spent what he could afford which was about 1 month salary at the time.

I think there is such a thing as too big and that it depends a lot on the personality.

How much? I think that depends, what may seem inexpensive to me, may be expensive to someone else and vice versa.

I love my ring, I feel it is playful and I've never seen anything else close to it.

in all honesty I depends on the size of the hand it's being placed on. If she has smaller hands you will want to consider a smaller sized stone, larger hands larger stone. quality is importent. I wouldn't care if it was 4carrot ring if it looked yellow or flawed .Also get her input on the shape of the stone. Most girls have a cut they prefer. My husband got me a 1.37 carrot marquise diamond and I love it. But thats bc I prefer the marquise cut.

I had one that had 3 quality diamonds but who knows that? Only me. But, they do sparkle alot more.. they were his Mother's..

Honestly, I would like a nice sized stone but it doesn't need to be enormous or goddy. Just something that as Glitz said, I can see. The quality is important as well. Truth be told though, if my boyfriend could only afford a very small diamond or even just a pretty band then that would be fine. I don't need the finer things in life as long as I have his love. That's all that matters.
