amoxicillin reaction

I was taking amoxiciliin for a sinus infection and after awhile i broke out in a close to full body rash it was not bumpy but red and everywhere and i of course stoppe dthe medication and it prety much went away 3 days after I stopped..is this the allergic or non-allergic reaction?

If you broke out in a rash from taking the amoxicillin than it is considered to be an allergic reaction.

That is what I thought, but I read there is sometimes a non-allergic rash that can happen...

Actually-the allergic reaction rash will appear differently than what is known as an amoxicillan rash or toxic rash. An allergic reaction will appear more like hives or be extremely itchy and be all over your body. If it is a lighter pink or red rash with spots that are flat and stays mainly on the trunk of the body (though it may spread to arms and face) it would likely be considered the amox rash-which is NOT an allergic reaction. The best way to find out would be to see a dermatologist while you have the rash still. Obviously yours is gone-and within the typical time frame of the amox rash (usually lasts about 3 days, can last up to 6).

Be careful when assuming an allergic reaction to amoxicillan or any other penicillan related drug as if you are truly allergic it is very important to make that known to any dr or pharmacist who is involved in your medical care, and at the same time penicillan is such a broad spectrum antibiotic that it is very important in treating many severe infections, and if you are not actually allergic to it but tell drs that you are, it could prevent effective/efficient treatment should you ever actually need penicillan.

I am highly allergic to amoxicillan....It actually is on all my records...It affects me with the rash and shortness of breath so don't mess around with it....

I saw the Dermatologist and spoke with the Pharmacist about this so I can only use Cipro as a defense against infections...

I know this is an old conversation but I have a similar allergy and just want some clarification if possible. I tasted augmentin (Amoxicillin and clavanulate potassium) for about 3 days (my 9 year old was taking it for an infection), just to see if I was really allergic. The first time a small portion of my lip was swollen and itched for a short while.The second time no reaction just a funny feeling on my tongue and after the third time I noticed some spots like measles on my hands. My fingers got a bit swollen so I stopped tasting. It lasted for about 2-3 days but I am not sure if I got a penicillin allergic reaction or not. Please respond if you know what happened to me.

If you want to be 100% sure see a physician, I recommend it anyway penicillin is a commonly prescribed antibiotic, so find out before you end up taking it and something serious happens. The body reacts in different ways to a foreign material it dose not like, when a part of your body becomes swollen it's a immune response. I would say you had a allergic reaction, it's not a great idea to take a medication that was not prescribed for you. Sounds like a mild allergic reaction to me but only as medical student/EMT

I know that I had a reaction in the past but wasnt sure it was an allergic reaction. For clarity,I tasted the medication just to see my reaction to it since my physician is not one that will discuss my 'allergy'.
I thought I was allergic and I told him I was allergic to Penicillin but I am not a medical person to ascertain if it was an allergic reaction I had years ago. I think I need to visit another physician.

My daughter reacts to this, why take something that does this? There are plenty of alternatives.

I just want to make sure that I am allergic and not just thinking I am because of something that may be a side effect.
I intend to follow up with a new physician and determine if I am allergic or not (since Penicillin has such a broad spectrum).
