Mirena: Issues and Concerns

Hi i'm getting mine removed tomorrow and i can't wait i have felt so low for so long and also i am spotting every week and worried that it is something elso wrong, i'm looking forward to not feeling anxious any more and now i've made an appointment for him to get the snip after 3 kids i have had enough of my body being messed about he can have a go lol x

Ok so this is the first time I've done anything like this. And I'm trying to gather as much information and research about mirena. I went to the doctor yesterday she said that mirena might be a good option for me to consider to take care of my situation (get my period twice a month). I think it sounds great but i'm nervous. I've done some reading and still don't quite understand that procedure. I'm 18 and never been pregnant nor do i wish to for a long time. I'm just seeking insight to anyone who has had it done to explain how it's done and if it's painful? I'm pretty much terrified of going to the gyno and just want to know what to expect before i make a decision. Any advice is appreciated...thanks!

ive had a mirena since I was 18 because I cannot be on the pill. I was a very athlethic 18 year old non smoker and the pill gave me a stroke.
it was a bit painful getting put in - took a few days of tylonal but nothing i couldnt handle... also had a few days of bleeding with my second one...
they ended up having to take my first one out under a d and c because they could not see the strings which was a bit of work going to the hospital for... but not that big of a deal. because of the d and c the new iud they put in slipped a bit and they had to put in another one. no pain in these second two.
I think its a great option for me. once its in there and in place its worry free for 5 years. if you dont have coverage it can be a bit expensive but if you add up the cost of the pill over 5 years its actually less.

Thanks for the insight. But i'm just wondering about the procedure itself. Like i said i'm very nervous to go to the gyn and i haven't had a pelvic exam before so i really don't know how they put it in or anything. If you could expalin it to me a little bit that would be greatly appreciated.

I got mirena put in last year in January. I had been on the pill since i was 16 (i'm 22 now, 21 when it was inserted) but I wanted something different even though i had no bad experiences with the pill. You said that you want to know about the procedure but since you have never had a pelvic exam before it might be difficult for you to visualize it. The beginning is basically like a pelvic exam, they are going to use a speculum to open your vagina up so the cervix can be seen, I'm sure you can find pictures of it online. It feels a little weird but won't hurt. They are going to dilate your cervix to insert the mirena and this is the part that hurts. For me I was ready for some pain and the pain only lasts for a few minutes during the procedure. After they push the mirena into your cervix they check the strings and then remove the speculum. You said you went to the doctor, but have never had a pelvic exam? Even so, your doctor will go over everything step by step as long as you ask. I had normal periods before and after I had it inserted my periods completely stopped, this is uncommon so don't expect it but I have recently been getting a light period for the last 2 months. I went to planned parenthood and it was free because i signed up for a family planning program. I know you are nervous, I was too but it is completely worth it after the couple minutes of pain! I have had my Mirena 5 year device in for 2 years and one month. It was slightly painful to insert it after I had my baby, but now we are ready for another one so I had it removed. Except, I went to the doctor whose PA told me that she couldn't grab the strings and could only find one little tip on the ultrasound so we thought it was embedded. Which meant another appointment so I could take some pills that would soften my cervix. I went in today to have my IUD removed, they forcefully dilated me and found it floating around my uterus with the scope they inserted (not sure why they thought it was embedded, or why I needed this procedure except that they cut the strings so short that she was having trouble grabbing them to pull it out. 10 minutes after the procedure they gave me a shot of toradol, but by then I was just cramping. The question I have is should I have been given something to help numb me? I keep reading that it is common to give lidocaine or novocaine injections into the cervix. I was in so much pain that I almost vomited from the dilation, then was still for the rest of the procedure on the verge of passing out. I was cold and light headed from the horrible pain and I am very tolerant of pain ( 15 hours of active labor with no pain medicine). Should I have been given pain medicine?

This was the problem with my first one and they removed it under a general anesthetic at the hospital....

I have had the Mirena for 2 1/2 years now. I love it. Yeah I have back pains but I went from having a C cup to DD with 2 kids. I have always had migraines and I'm moody because I'm a mom...jk. I used to have periods to where the first 2 days I would be in bed crying from the pain unable to move. I havent had my period in over a year and a half and loving it. The only problem I have is the day after my husband and I are intimate I spot, but only for about 2 hours normally during the middle of the day. My fun drive had never been really strong so not much changed there. But I wouldnt change it and go back to incredibly horrible periods.

I too have Mirena, I am coming up on the 5 year replacement date in May (which is a whole different kettle of fish). I LOVE IT! Its great, I have no periods, no pain, am only slightly moody around that time of the month and its allowed me to be much more active than I could ever have hoped to be whilst I was having periods. I am hopeless at remembering to take the pill so it was a good choice for me.

I had it put in after the birth of my second child.

And no my OH cant feel the strings, but if yours can you can go back and ask for them to be cut shorter. It does take a couple of days for them to settle and now I really have to search to find them, but they're there.

The Mirana screwed me all up!! It caused cyst after cyst for me. The more I talk about it the more I hear the same stories as mine. My sister had the Mirana and couldnt feel her string no more. Went to the DR and it was growing attached to her cervix. She only had it a year. If she would have ignored it she would have had to have it surgically removed. I got it in Nov. 09 and in May 2010 I had it removed when I had my cyst removed. It hurt like heck goin in so I made sure they got it out when I was under general anestetic. Im still in severe pain in my abdominal/pelvic area. I know I have endometriosis or adhesions one...I still get cysts & im in alot of pain 24/7. Right now im getting the run-around from my OB/GYN. My family DR is doing more to figure out what is wrong with me than he is. Makes me furious. I have been spotting black sence Jan. 31. Feb. 17th it decided to turn red. Today it decided to turn brownish-red. Thats almost a whole month. My OB/GYN told me that if I had Endometriosis then I would have came off the table during a physical exam. It hurts me to have intercourse with my husband remind you. I have been on the Neuva Ring sence Dec. 2010. The nurse told me it would take 3-4 months to get into my system to level me out.
