Watercolor is one of the most challenging!!

The weight of the paper is a huge part. I'd suggest going to an art store and explaining that this is a new medium for you - bring the set with you (wet tubes versus dry palates) - for the sake of playing around, saturate part of the paper canvas and play with the dry as well - it's amazing what you can make when you're learning and goofing around!

You're really talented!! I think you'll like watercolor in the way that it's very free - I can't wait to see what you paint!!

Talk to them about it - paper weight is something really strange, my mother loves a heavier weight, she also loves saturating the paper and letting the colors blend more on their own. When I paint, I prefer a light weight - really smooth so I can paint more like drawing. I kind of think given your background you'd like a light weight... But, it could be really interesting to break away from actual lines and "control" that oil has, and really embrace watercolor.

I have to say, it's not easy, and you can't really paint over, so don't get frustrated if you don't like what you see, you can call it "a study"!! That's what "the greats" always said, right??

I don't do a lot of watercolor, but if you prefer more control over the saturation of you're color, I'd suggest getting tubed watercolors instead of the dry tablets. I find those to be grainy and harder to control.

Personally, I love Prismacolor Watercolor Pencils! I like to do some normal watercolor washes, and do details in pencil. I like to go over it with a pass of acrylic (Golden Acrylics are my favorite!) or marker (Prismacolor!) to bring out colors or highlights. I even use my acrylics as watercolors sometimes, haha. It's all water-based pigment.

Have you tried Gouache paint? I used that in art school. It is slightly more expensive than watercolor, but more opaque. And as
others have suggested combination. I have used oils, pastels, tempra, acrylics, watercolor paint and pencil, gouache, and ink. Mixed
    media can provide startling results!
