white bread and pasta, but not other grains with gluten? I can eat loads of oatmeal and whole wheat breads and even baked goods (muffins, scones...) just fine. But a pasta dinner with ciabatta bread or a few pieces of pizza (especially with a beer) and I'm all bloated and doubled over with stomach cramping and gas.
Or could it be something else?

    hey sourpuss,
when you have the pasta do you have tomato sauce with it? it almost sounds like the culprit might be tomato sauce since pizza and pasta both have it on them. i know when i breast fed my children i had to avoid any thing with tomato on it or in it because tomatoes are acidic and it bothered my babies when i fed them after i consumed them. is it only pizza and pastas that are doing this? you can develope an allergy to anything at anytime in your life even if you have eaten or taken it for the most part of your life. well i hope you get some answers to your problem. lynne

If you are intolerant to gluten, anything in it would cause the same reaction. Oatmeal is usually okay, it usually does not have gluten. If you are worried you can cut out the foods that are bothering you and one at a time reintroduce them and see which ones you have a problem with.. it can help you figure out the culprit. Hope you feel better

It could be enriched flour, homogonized oils - look at the first few ingredients and most likely that could be it. Also, sometimes food allergies are mistaken for a far more serious condition such as GERD - look it up and check out the symptoms, it sounds like they may be similar to what you are experiencing and find a good GI doctor - it wouldn't hurt to visit a GI doctor to get some tests run so that you can rule out the possibility of GERD or not. Good luck.

Hmm, I am wondering this same thing. I have realized I am allergic to beer. If I drink it, I have numbness in my extremities and mouth for about a day after, and feel like I was hit by a truck. I can drink any other alcohol and it doesn't do this, even wine coolers. I don't eat much bread because of the carbs, but last night I ate some bread pudding, and my heart started racing like a jack rabbit. I am starting to wonder about wheat myself.

Numbness in the extremities is not really one of the symptoms I've ever heard of being related to food allergy, same thing with accelerated heart rate.... I mean if they are , its good that I'm learning, but if they are not, it would be important for you to talk to your doctor about the rapid beats and numbness, it could be a symptom of something else?

Well, I haven't been able to figure this out yet, and seeing a doctor is a stretch. I have no insurance and struggle from paycheck to paycheck. So that will have to wait. But the numbness has only happened with drinking beer. It's weird.

Gluten alergies are fairly common, but I've never heard of those symptoms. If a doc visit is not possible, I'd say to avoid the foods you know cause the reaction. One warning..... food allergies can be very dangerous and symptoms may increase drastically in a short amt of time. It can go from a mildly irritating to an acute health emergency very quickly. Don't take chances

I have the same problem with beer, my fiance has the same problem with certain types of bread and pizza. I

suggest you keep a diary of the things you eat, record the bulk of ingredients the foods contain, then record your bowel movements, bloatedness or constipation. This method may help you seek out possible causes

One thing you may be missing is that beer contains gluten!! And often things like pizza bases and pasta will use flours that contain higher levels of gluten, because this makes the dough more malleable. I would say that when you have these foods together with beer, you're crossing the threshold of how much gluten your body can tolerate before it says "no more! I can't take it!"

I've gradually avoided more and more gluten products over the years, as I've slowly discovered my sensitivity. Recently I went completely gluten-free, dairy-free as an experiement. Even though I was already avoiding most gluten-containing grains, I cut out oats as well and have only been buying gluten-free, dairy-free products. WOW! What a difference it has made! I no longer feel like I need to snack all the time, I feel full with less, and I'm getting more energy.

I'm now on the GFCF diet, which is "gluten free, casein free" because the casein in dairy affects your gut in a similar way to how gluten does. It's a hard diet to adjust to, but I would recommend you try it for a couple of weeks to see how you feel. Until I tried it I had no idea how much I was being affected by gluten, even though I already avoided wheat and some other grains.
