As a special education teacher, there are things you can do outside of medication to help your child, even though you will find in the research that medication does produce the best results! However, be careful as some medications make some children lethargic, and that is not what you want.
Talk with your child's teacher and help find ways to alleviate strain on your child, perhaps by getting them to create a signal where the child can leave the class environment for a few minutes to break up the time they need to pay attention, to chunk their homework into smaller pieces so they do not get easily distracted, to allow for movement in activities in the classroom or to create a reward system for staying on task as long as possible (increasing the time as they improve!) The biggest thing you can do as a parent is to educate yourself and to have lots of patience. Once you understand the disorder, you can understand and empathize with what your child feels!

There's a great book you should read, it's called Driven to Distraction, I believe the authors are Edward M. Hallowell, M.D., and John J. Ratey, M.D. You can probably get it cheap/used on Amazon.com Hope this helps. As a person with A.D.D. myself, the best advice I can give you is to BE PATIENT with your son, and don't discipline him (I'm sure you wouldn't) for being hyper, impulsive, or distracted, because he can't help it! Adderall has been a good medication for me, and as a nurse, for my patients as well.

My daughter was diagnosed 4 years ago. We had her in therapy, and learned alot from her doctor on dealing with her better. Both my husband and I attended classes to help. Alot of hands on training, it is something that you will be in the long hall for.
A child with ADHD will have a hard time making friends as they are impulsive, off task and very un organized, they drive people (their peers crazy) she is 10 now and really struggles in having friends, which as girls ourselves you know you got to have girl friends. Most of her friends are boys and they are not the right choice always. We did choose not to put her on medicine, however we did find a natural alternative Native remedies has herbal remedies that have seemed to help. (it just depends on your kid too)
There are so many books out there. Hit the library first for the basics, try a child physcologist, they will have bio-feed back therapy helps too.
Good luck to ya, try and read the book by James Dobson the "new strongwilled child" it's a good one and he has good reading on ADHD.
    Cheers

    Default Additive Alert

I've just recently purchased a great book called 'Additive Alert' by Julie Eady. (You can find it by doing a search on www.google.com). It confirms a widely-held theory that synthetic chemicals and additives in our foods can contribute to ADHD and is a must-read for every parent or grandparent!
