When I went to my county health department with birth contol questions, they said I couldn't take any form of birth contol with estrogen in it until I had my headaches re-evaluated. I know that I have migranes, as I was diagnosed with them in the third grade. What could be a reason that I wouldn't be able to have estrogen? My problem is, there's only two kinds of birth contol I can take. The Depo shot caused too many problems, such as being tired all of the time and falling asleep in class. Then, there's one pill I could take. I couldn't remember to take the ten antibiotics I was given for a spider bite. That was only ten days. Any ideas or advice?
I'm not a health-care professional, but I've read that estrogen can increase the occurance or severity of migranes in some women. I also know that the info that comes with birth control pills states that there's some connection between taking the pill and increased risk of stroke, which is something that has also been associated with migranes. Maybe that's why they want your migranes re-evaluated before they'll give you a prescription? Something to discuss with your doctor.
Unfortunately, when I questioned the lady that was asking all of the questions, she simply said she didn't know and had me wait an exta hour and a half to see the nurse, which told me how birth control works, even though I already knew, and still never gave me an answer. It's just been frustrating. My periods are horrible. I wish to be rid of them. Plus, it wouldn't hurt to lessen the chance of pregnancy for the time being. Thank you so much for the information. They never told me anything about strokes and hightened migranes.
I guess they must be having trouble finding good help at that clinic. Shouldn't a nurse who works in a medical facility and sees patients be able to give complete answers?!! Anyway, I would strongly reccommend that you find yourself a doctor, preferrably a gynecologist, to answer your questions. Also, do a google search on 'birth control pills and migraines' and see what you come up with. I hope that you get the answers that you need and that things go well for you with finding new birth control. Here's some info for you to consider in the meantime. Some of this info may not apply to you, but look at what it says about birth control pills and migraines.
