Jaw Surgery

Hi. I am having jaw surgery in 3 weeks and I was wondering if you could tell me what to expect for recovery. I am having my lower jaw moved forward and my upper jaw broken and realigned to fix my huge open bite and over bite. What was your diet like? How much weight did you lose?

I am assuming the diet would be the same as mine was, maybe the schedule would progress a little slower cause you are having both done? The first week was liquids/puddings only. Then the next week was like scrambled eggs I believe and lastly was really soft. Sorry I cant remember the diet exactly.

I lost maybe 5-10lbs but it was hard to tell cause I gained it right back. Even though I wasn't eating a lot I felt it wasn't healthy, ice cream, puddings, potatoes...it was like no veggies or fruit. I def. wouldnt count on losing weight from it cause when you go back to normal it may come back quickly and I would just focus on making sure you are eating what you can, even if it is unhealthy. Cause you are gonna want food in your stomach with the pain meds.

I had jaw surgery over 15 years ago and for the most part I have been very happy with the results. I had both upper and lower jaw surgery done at the same time to correct an overbite. The surgery was a success, however lately I have been experiencing some tender spots along my jaw line where the screws and plates were put into place. Has anyone else experienced this? Sometimes I feel like one of the screws might be 'popping out', which sounds crazy.

Has anyone else experienced similar tenderness?

Im ongoing preparation for this surgery and absolutely cant wait ... people think im mad and i know ill think the same when it comes to coming round afterwards.
i had braces on the top jaw about 3 years ago and chickened out of surgery and now im older i decided to have it and they said it was a perfect time for me
i had my bottom brace on in september last year and top brace on may this year as that didnt need much pre work done to it. i have a really bad underbite so they are bringing my top jaw forward and pushing my bottom jaw back.
i am also having a cleft pallet repair as they didnt do a very good job of it the first time and still have problems with liquids so they said that they will do them both at the same time, im hoping to have surgery sometime next year, around christmas time im guessing...
one thing i was wondering is do they have to take your wisdom teeth out pre op?

i do have a lot more questions to ask but im generally quite excited about the whole thing, think im the only one

Okay, so I have to get the surgery and I'm quite nervous. I have a really bad underbite and it's actually making my bottom teeth seperate which is really unattractive, and also, I can't laugh a lot or my jaw tightens. ): Which sucks because I love to laugh...I want to get it done soon, because I'm going into my junior year, which means prom, and I'd like to get it before I graduate. The problem is, money. Did insurance cover it, or did you have to pay out of pocket? Also, did you have your jaw wired shut, or what? I don't know much about the surgery, and I know I need to do my research, but I was wondering if you could answer some of these. (: Okay, thank you.

So theres a popular surgery called Maxiofacial surgery and its when they break your jaw and re-align it. I recently got this surgery last summer and it was by far the most intense experience of mylife. I had to have my jaw wired shut, could only dring liquids for 2 weeks it was awful. I had upper and lower jaw surgery at the same time, where most only have upper, or only have lower. I've been through more dental work then anyone could imagine, so if anyone is considering getting this surgery, or has been toold they should I am very experienced and knowlaged in the subject so if you have any questions about it I'll do my best to answer. I know it would have been helpful for me to be able to talk to someone prior to deciding to do the whole thing. So I'm here if anyone has questions!

Hi, Im 19 and i have a tiny underbite, it's getting worse and worse and im worried that soon my bottom jawline will surpass my top jaw and my teeth will look horrible... im considering getting the bottom jaw pushed back but im terrified about what that might require. What exactly happens? do you have to wear a cast on your face? how painful is it? and does everything function normally after the healing process? is it worth the trouble?
