BPA in Baby Bottles

Hello Everyone,

A family friend notified me about the BPA in Avent bottles because i use them for my baby. I did some research on it and saw that its not just in Avent baby bottles but some other baby bottles too, as well as water bottles and food containers. As far as i know and read, this study was only proven in animals. They have not confirmed this yet in humans. I am still worried though becuase many experts are advising people to switch to BPA free bottles just to be safe. Im not sure if i should do that? I dont over heat her bottles , i use a sterilizer and a bottle warmer to heat her bottles. Any advice?

My sister and I have become very environmentally conscious in the last few years and we have done quite a bit of research on BPA (of which the real name is Bisphenol-A). This is found in most plastic products, even that hard polycarbonate stuff that a lot of people put their water and coffee in to tote it around. It is also what most baby bottles and sippy cups are made from.

What happens is that each time plastics containing BPA are heated - and this does include hot water washing and dishwasher washing - small amounts of BPA leach out of the plastics and remain on the inner and outer surface, mixing with the food or drinks, and we ingest it. BPA is a chemical that has been linked to cancer and infertility - it mimics estrogen and disrupts the hormones in your body.

The FDA promised it was going to do new research on BPA, but lately has changed their minds and said that it's fine. California just recently passed a law banning BPA from products.

Everyone has to make their own decisions, do their own research, but my sister and I both switched to BPA free products. Which of course are a bit more expensive, but most organic and sustainable products for the house are.

I work teaching elementary classrooms about nature and the enviroment....here's some info you NEED!

It's called the mobius loop...it's that triangle shape on the bottom of all plastic containers and cups made with arrows ...there's a number inside of it showing the grade of plastic. The #7 is discontinued although there's still several in use but that is the grade that is made with BPA.

FYI #1,#3,#5 plasctics are all recyclable and made into carpets, fleece, plumbing pipes, bread bag clips, plastic pellets for stuffing teddy bears and sleeping bags, frisbees etc etc...the list goes on and on!#4 plastics are filmy (grocery bags etc) and get made back into bags. You can even recycle tinfoil!

But getting back to BPA....the studies continually change on what is safe....I recommend NOT using ANY hard plastic....if you hold it in your hand and can't sqeeze it, chances are it's a #7 plastic. Last studies show when heated up the BPA will seep into the fluid it's holding (ie. your baby milk) but studies are unclear what temperature does this. Some studies show room temperature, other studies says the suns heat,others say high temperatures from the microwave or hot water etc etc and different studies are not in agreement at this time.

The best bet is NO #7 PLASTIC AT ALL!!!
